The #8/9 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (3-0-1, 0-0-0 NCHC) will play its inaugural games in the new National Collegiate Hockey Conference at the #5/6 University of North Dakota (2-1-1, 1-1-0 NCHC) this weekend. On Nov. 1, the Huskies and UND will play at 7:37 p.m. and the game on Nov. 2 will begin at 7:07 p.m. Both games will be played at the Ralph Engelstad Arena (11,634 cap./200x85) in Grand Forks, N.D.

HUSKY HEADLINERS:
NORTH STAR COLLEGE CUP: SCSU will play Minnesota in the first round of the inaugual North Star College Cup on Jan. 24 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul at 7 p.m. The early game that day will feature UMD and Minnesota State, Mankato at 4 p.m. The consolation and championship game will take place on Jan. 25 at the Xcel. COLGATE GETS CAPPED: SCSU maintained its unbeaten record in 2013-14 with a weekend series sweep at Colgate. On Oct. 25, the Huskies charted a 4-2 victory over the Raiders and on Oct. 26, St. Cloud State completed the series with a 4-3 victory in Hamilton, N.Y. The Huskies own a 3-0-1 record this season. This marks the Huskies' best start since beginning the 2003-04 season with an 8-0-1 record.,,The series sweep also moved the Huskies' series record against Colgate to 5-0-1.
NEXT HOME GAMES: St. Cloud State will return home on Nov. 8-9 for a pair of games at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center conference rival Miami (Ohio). These will be the first NCHC games played at the Brooks Center. Sophomore Kalle Kossila posted his first goal of the season and also added the second assist on Niklas Nevalainen's power play goal in the first period (his first as a Husky). Nevalainen also coined assists on goals by Papa and Kossila. Both Kossila and Nevalainen are residents of Finland along with SCSU teammate sophomore goaltender Rasmus Reijola. Rookie defender Niklas Nevalainen made his collegiate debut at Colgate on Oct. 25. Nevalainen played junior hockey with Dubuque of the USHL in 2012-13.
PRAISE FOR PAPA: SCSU's other newcomer to break into the scoring column at Colgate was freshman forward Ryan Papa, who posted a goal in both wins over the Raiders. Papa is one of three SCSU skaters this season from the state of Illino
THE SHORT LIST: SCSU senior forward Nic Dowd gained his second shorthanded game winner of the season on Oct. 26. Dowd leads the Huskies this season with three goals and he now ranks eighth in the team records with nine career game winners. Dowd currently ranks first in nation for SHGs along with Riley Barber of Miami (Ohio). He also ranks second in the nation with two game winning goals.
SHOT STATS: The Huskies have outshot their opponents 150-101 in 2013-14. SCSU outshot Colgate in both games this past weekend and have now outshot their opponents in the Huskies' last 10 games - dating back to March 15, 2013.
ON THE BOARD IN 2013-14: Cory Thorson, Nick Oliver and Jonny Brodzinski all scored their first goals of the 2013-14 season during the Huskies' 4-2 win at Colgate on Oct. 25. Brodzinski led the nation's Division I freshmen in 2012-13 with 22 goals. He shares SCSU's point scoring lead this season with four points apiece... Thorson scored his 20th career goal and 20th career assist at Colgate. In 97 games as a Husky, Thorson now has 40 points.
DRAFT STATUS: The 2013-14 roster at SCSU includes five NHL draft picks. The groups includes Los Angeles Kings draftees Kevin Gravel, Nic Dowd and Jonny Brodzinski. Nick Oliver is a draft choice of Nashville and Ben Storm is a 2013 draft pick of Colorado. SCSU has enjoyed a strong link to the NHL over the years with 24 former SCSU student-athletes going on to play in the NHL since 1931-32. In 2013-14 former SCSU players to see ice time in NHL games include Ryan Malone (Tampa Bay), Matt Cullen (Nashville) and Matt Hendricks (Nashville). Former SCSU players in 2012-13 to see NHL ice time were Malone, Cullen (Minnesota), Hendricks (Washington), Andrew Gordon (Vancouver), Ben Hanowski (Calgary), Drew LeBlanc (Chicago), Oliver Lauridsen (Philadelphia) and Andreas Nodl (Carolina).
HUSKY NOTES: SCSU senior Nic Dowd has played in 87 consecutive games for the Huskies. ..Dowd continues his march toward the SCSU 100-point club. Dowd now has 33 goals and 52 assists at SCSU, which places him 15 points away from 100.
NEW NAME: St. Cloud State announced on April 17, 2013 that it will rename its home arena in honor of Herb Brooks. A former Husky head coach during the 1986-87 season, Brooks played a key role in the Huskies' move to the Division I level. The arena will now be called the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. On second reference, pleae refer to the facility as the Brooks Center.
