Portner named new Associate Director of Herb Brooks National Hockey Center at SCSU

St. Cloud State University Director of Sports Facilities and Campus Recreation Ron Seibring announced today the appointment of Cory Portner as the University's new Associate Director of the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
Portner will replace Joe Meierhofer, who recently retired after serving as the facility's director since the building was opened in 1989-90.
"We are very excited about the addition of Cory Portner to our staff here at St. Cloud State," Seibring said. "His experience and talent will help us carry on the tradition of quality service and top-notch ice conditions established by Joe Meiehofer."
The appointment marks a homecoming for Portner, who attended St. Cloud State University and was a former student Zamboni driver at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center from 1998 to 2000.
"I am excited to carry on the legacy and tradition that St. Cloud State University has established. It is an honor to have worked with Joe Meierhofer and I am looking forward to providing a great experience for the user groups of the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center," Portner said.
Portner most recently worked as a Regional Operations Manager for Rink Management Services Corporation, a Virginia based company. Rink Management Services Corporation is the largest operator of ice rinks in the United States.
Portner is contracted with the 2018 Olympic Games as the Chief Ice Technician for Figure Skating and Short Track Speed Skating with the PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympic & Paralympic Games. His work in South Korea includes control of all ice making and conditions at the Gangneung Ice Arena in regards to Figure Skating & Short Track competition.
Portner was employed with the U.S. Ice Rink Association from 2007 to 2016. He served as the Membership and Training Director and was a lead instructor for the Certified Ice Technician training program with the U.S. Ice Rink Association and was involved with the coordination of the North American Rink Conference and Expo, the industry's largest annual exposition and educational event for ice rink professionals.
From 2002 to 2007, Portner worked as the Director of Operations at the Mid-American Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa – a multipurpose ice arena and convention center.
As a college student at St. Cloud State, Portner worked as a student Zamboni driver and served as a student facility manager responsible for nightly and weekend operations of the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. In addition, Portner worked during his college career as a Zamboni driver at the Municipal Athletic Complex in St. Cloud State. He went on to receive his degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2001.
Portner began his career as a facility manager at the Lincoln Stars Hockey's Ice Box arena in Lincoln, Neb. From 1996 to 1998.
The Herb Brooks National Hockey Center is home ice for the NCAA Division I men's and women's hockey programs at St. Cloud State University. The HBNHC is a multi-purpose facility featuring two Olympic size sheets of ice under one roof. Overall the facility measures more than 140,000 square feet with each sheet of ice measuring 200x100.
The facility was opened in 1989-90 and was renamed in honor of the legendary hockey coach Herb Brooks in April 2013. Brooks coached at SCSU for one season in 1986-87 and he played a pivotal role in the Huskies' move to the NCAA Division I level and helped secure funding for the construction of the facility in the 1980s.
Located in Central Minnesota along the oak-crowned west bank of the Mississippi River in the city of St. Cloud, Minn., St. Cloud State University sponsors 19 varsity intercollegiate athletic programs. The Huskies compete at the NCAA Division I level in men's hockey (National Collegiate Hockey Conference) and women's hockey (Western Collegiate Hockey Association), while its NCAA Division II programs hold membership in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and the University's nordic ski team competes in the Central Collegiate Ski Association.
