Huskies fall short of a comeback against the Bulldogs

ST. CLOUD, MINN. - The St. Cloud State University women's hockey team (3-6-0, 1-4-0 WCHA) lost their first season matchup against the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs (5-3-1, 3-3-1 WCHA) in a one-goal game on Friday, Oct. 26 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.

The Bulldogs came out flying onto the ice in the first period, putting themselves in the two-goal lead straight away. Duluth sophomore Anna Klein scored just 57 seconds into the game, giving her team a quick bounce of momentum that they would carry well through the second period. Klein's goal was assisted by UMD's Jalyn Elmes and Ashton Bell.

Anneke Linser of Duluth scored a power play goal at 14:43 of the period, assisted by Elmes and Maggie Flaherty. The Bulldogs retained their 2-0 lead on the Huskies all the way through the second period.

"We kept competing in a close game, and I thought the difference in the game was our puck management," said Huskies' head coach Eric Rud. "We had possession of the puck many, many times and made poor decisions whether it was holding on to it or throwing it to nowhere. We would pass up a simple play, looking for the bigger and better play while the first shuts down."

Senior Julia Tylke scored her second goal of the season to put SCSU within one at 7:44 of the third period. Tylke's goal was assited by Hallie Theodosopoulos and Olivia Hanson. St. Cloud was unable to find the extra goal and would end the game in a 1-2 loss.

Goaltender Janine Alder stopped 39 shots in the game; UMD's Emma Soderberg stopped 15 shots. Final shots on goal were SCSU 16, UMD 41. St. Cloud went 0-3 on the power play and 1-2 on the penalty kill.

"I thought [Alder] was great from the start; she gave us a chance to win and there's nothing she could've done on either of those two goals," said Rud of SCSU's, once again, strong net presence.
