COLUMBUS, OH - The St. Cloud State University Huskies women's hockey team (4-8-0, 2-6-0 WCHA) were unable to comeback from a lengthy two-goal deficit against the Ohio State University Buckeyes (9-3-0, 5-1-0 WCHA) on Saturday, Nov. 3 at the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus, OH. The Buckeyes led through almost the entire game and came away with a 3-2 win, but St. Cloud put up a solid effort, including several close shots after getting within a goal with under four minutes left.
The Huskies struggled to get out of their defensive zone and put shots on goal during the first period against OSU. The Buckeyes took the 1-0 lead into the first intermission after their leading goal scorer Tatum Skaggs put one past SCSU's Janine Alder, assisted by Sara Saekkinen and Lisa Bruno. Ohio State outshot the Huskies 11-3 in the first period.
The second period treated the Huskies well to start. Senior scorer Julia Tylke continued her hot streak and tied the game 1-1 for SCSU a minute and five seconds into the period.
Ohio State packed on two more goals by the end of the period to take a two-goal lead into the third. OSU's Madison Field scored her third goal of the weekend at 3:40 of the second period and Charly Dahlquist put another one on the board short-handed at 14:29. Emma Maltais and Jincy Dunne assisted on each of those two goals.
The third period was filled with fast-paced, back-and-forth play between the Huskies and Buckeyes. St. Cloud's Hallie Theodosopoulos was the one to finally break through the OSU defense and boost the Husky momentum once again. At 16:13, Theodosopoulos, assisted by Jenniina Nylund scored to put SCSU within one.
Though St. Cloud State put up a good fight with several shots on net and pulling Alder for the extra attacker with almost two minutes remaining, the Huskies could not find that last goal for the second game in a row to force overtime. The game would end, once again, with a 3-2 Ohio State victory and series sweep.
St. Cloud State goaltender Janine Alder stopped 36 shots in the game; Ohio State's Andrea Braendli had 17 saves. Final shots on goal from today's game in Columbus were SCSU 19, OSU 39. St. Cloud went 0-2 on the power play and 1-0 on the penalty kill.
The Huskies are on the road once again next weekend to play Lindenwood University in St. Charles, MO. The St. Cloud State women's hockey team returns home Saturday, Nov. 17 at 2:07 p.m. against the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers.
