BEMIDJI, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University Huskies women's hockey team (5-13-1, 2-10-0 WCHA) were shutout 0-2 against the Bemidji State Beavers (4-12-1, 4-7-1 WCHA) on Saturday, Dec. 1 at the Sanford Center. Bemidji completed their weekend sweep of the Huskies and did not allow a single goal on SCSU's 37 shots in the series.
"We had some good quality chances and did a lot of good things offensively; we played well tonight but didn't win," said SCSU head coach Eric Rud.
The first period saw similar results on the scoreboard from yesterday's game with the Beaver's leading SCSU 1-0 after one. Bemidji's goal came from freshman Ellie Moser, assisted by Jacquelin Kaasa and Mak Langei at 2:15 of the period.
There was no score change in the second period; it was a back-and-forth 20 minutes that included two Huskies power play attempts. The Beavers and Huskies went to the locker rooms after two periods of play with even shots on goal at 21 a piece.
The Beaver's out-shot St. Cloud 15-5 in the third period. BSU's Haley Mack capped off the win with an empty net goal and put up her fourth goal of the series.
St. Cloud State goaltender Emma Polusny stopped 34 shots in the game; the Beaver's Lauren Bench had 26 saves to complete the shutout. Final shots on goal from today's game were SCSU 26, BSU 36. St. Cloud went 0-4 on the power play and 2-0 on the penalty kill.
"The last weekend of the first half is always interesting, there's a lot of things happening with finals and [girls] heading home – I think you have to manage this [upcoming] week smart and keep energy levels high," commented Rud about preparation for next weekend.
The women's hockey team returns home to the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center next weekend (December 7 & 8) to take on the Wisconsin Badgers in one more WCHA matchup before the new year. Those games are at 3:07 p.m. Friday and 2:07 p.m. Saturday afternoon and will be followed by the SCSU men's hockey team facing off against conference opponent, the Omaha Mavericks, at 7:07 and 6:22 p.m. respectively.
