ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University Huskies women's hockey team (7-15-1, 2-12-0 WCHA) completed their weekend sweep of the Lindenwood University Lions (3-13-2, 1-6-1 CHA) in a Sunday afternoon game Dec. 30 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.

"We definitely needed that; to come out and get two wins, it sets you up in the right direction for the second half," said Huskies' Head Coach Eric Rud.

St. Cloud's Laura Kluge got the scoring started late in the first period. Off a cross-ice pass in front of the Lions' netminder from Hannah Potrykus, Kluge scored a shorthanded goal to put the Huskies up 1-0 at 19:01 of the period. That was SCSU's first SHG of the season.

Freshman point-leader Jenniina Nylund gave SCSU the two-goal lead at 12:03 of the second period. Hallie Theodosopoulos grabbed the puck off a Lindenwood turnover and a pass to Nylund completed the play. Nylund now has 16 points on the season (5g-11a).

Lindenwood would not end the period scoreless however; Jada Burke put one past SCSU goaltender Janine Alder on a late period power play for the Lions. The team's entered the third period with a 2-1 Huskies' lead.

The third period saw much back-and-forth play but no change to the score sheet. SCSU had a penalty call go their way with 1:36 left in the period leaving the Lions shorthanded and down by one, unable to pull their goaltender for the extra attacker. The game ended with a 2-1 St. Cloud win and Huskies' sweep.

"I think for the first time we have some line combinations that make sense," said Rud, "we've had so many injuries and people in and out. I think the best part of our weekend was our rush offense; we made a lot of plays on [those] and had a lot of good chances."

St. Cloud State goaltender Janine Alder stopped 27 shots in the game; the Lions' Sophie Wolf had 30 saves. Final shots on goal from today's game were SCSU 32, LWU 28. St. Cloud went 0-2 on the power play and 2-3 on the penalty kill.

MINNESOTA CUP: St. Cloud State will participate in the first ever Minnesota Cup featuring the Minnesota Gophers, Minnesota Duluth, Minnesota State-Mankato and SCSU in a tournament format on January 5-6, 2019, hosted by the University of Minnesota. Minnesota's five Division-I women's hockey teams will take their shot at an annual state tournament as the WCHA introduced the new tournament as part of its 20th anniversary season in 2018-19. All four games are considered nonconference games.

"I think this tournament format will be exciting and we look forward to getting back on the ice," said Rud about the upcoming games.

The Huskies return home to the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center January 18 for a 3:07 p.m. matchup against WCHA opponent, the Minnesota State Mavericks.
