MINOT, N.D. - In dramatic fashion, the St. Cloud State women's basketball team (4-3, 1-2 NSIC) collected their first conference win of the 2018-19 season over Minot State 61-60. Junior guard, Madelin Dammann was the hero in Saturday night's contest after delivering the game-winning shot at the end of regulation. In the final seconds of play, Dammann recorded an offensive rebound, then followed with a fadeaway jumper that would give SCSU the 61-60 decision on the road.
Dammann was also the Huskies' leading scorer with 16 points, while Nikki Kilboten followed with a career high of 12 points. In her second start of the season, Katrina Theis also contributed 11 points, five rebounds and two assists. Of note, Kilboten was only two rebounds shy of her first career double-double.
St. Cloud State enjoyed an 18-13 lead after the first quarter, including an eight point effort from Madelin Dammann early in the contest. However, the Huskies were out-scored 23-3 in the second period which forced SCSU to climb out of a 15 point deficit after the half. Entering the fourth quarter trailing nine points, St. Cloud State continued to claw back and out-score the Beavers 23-13, despite trailing until the final seconds of regulation.
As a team, St. Cloud State shot 37.1 percent (23-62) from the field and 41.7 percent (10-24) from three-point land. The Huskies were out-rebounded 39-36, but were able to capitalize on Minot's mistakes by scoring 15 points off of 15 Beaver turnovers.
The Beavers were led by Madison Wald's 19 point, eight rebound and four assist effort while also receiving 17 points and nine boards from Mariah Payne. Minot State held a lead for just over 70 percent of Saturday's contest, but falls to 5-4 (0-3 NSIC) after the weekend set.
SCSU will return home to Halenbeck Hall on Friday, Dec. 14 at 5:30 PM to host the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs, then take on the Sioux Falls Cougars on Saturday, Dec. 15 at 3:30 PM.
