
Huskies Defeat Upper Iowa in NSIC Opening Series

St. Cloud State opened their conference season with a 2-1 series win over Upper Iowa.
Summary of innings 1-11 from Sunday's game
GAME 1 | ST. CLOUD STATE 8, UPPER IOWA 5
After resuming play in the 12th inning, Mitch Mallek led off the inning by reaching base on a throwing error from the Peacock shortstop. Following the error, Jackson Goplen doubled to advance Mallek to third. With two Huskies in scoring position, Caeden Harris tripled in the gap to bring home two runs and give SCSU a 7-5 lead. A sacrifice fly from Mat Meyer would score Harris and increase the Huskies' lead to three. In the bottom half of the 12th, Kyle Boser slammed the door and recorded his first save of the season.
GAME 2 | UPPER IOWA 10 | ST. CLOUD STATE 5
The Huskies found themselves in an early two-run deficit after allowing a homerun in the first inning and one more run in the second inning. However, Aaron Hammann led the third inning off with a hit, then was moved over by a sacrtifice bunt by Ethan Ibarra. Hammann would score from second on a single from Bo Schmitz, then Schmitz would go on to score on a wild pitch to make the score 2-2. Mathew Meyer would extend the Huskies' lead after scoring Harris with a single, then later being hit in by Ibarra.
The Huskies led 4-2 going into the bottom half of the fourth before the Peacocks would respond with a three run inning to take a 5-4 lead. A wild pitch in the fifth would allow UIU to extend their lead, 6-4.
The sixth inning proved to be the fate of the Huskies in the second game of the series, allowing four runs on four hits to make the game 10-4.
A late rally led by Mitch Mallek, Ethan Ibarra and Bo Schmitz would fall short as the Huskies fell 10-5 to tie up the series.
Kyle Boser received the loss for the Huskies, moving to 1-2 on the season.
GAME 3 | ST. CLOUD STATE 5, UPPER IOWA 4
The Huskies found themselves in another two-run deficit by allowing two Peacocks to score on two wild pitches. After the first, neither team would score again until the sixth inning. In the sixth, the Huskies put up five runs on three hits, one sacrifice-fly and one error. Dominic Austing led the sixth off with.a ground-rule double, then the Huskies bats came to life. Jackson Goplen, Bo Schmitz and Harris would all record RBI's to go up 5-2 going into the bottom half of the sixth. The Peacocks pushed across two runs on two hits in the bottom of the sixth but their rally was ultimately cut short by Jackson Goplen when he threw out the tying-run at the plate to end the inning. Nathan Strobel recorded the save for his second of the year and Aaron Hammann notched his first win of the season.
UP NEXT
St. Cloud State travels to St. Paul to take on the Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears on Saturday, March 24 and Sunday, March 25. The Huskies will play double-header's starting at 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM on both Saturday and Sunday.
