St. Cloud State’s seven game winning streak was snapped in the game one loss against USF.
Sioux Falls, SD – For the second consecutive year, the St. Cloud State baseball team (15-8, 8-3 NSIC) split with the Sioux Falls Cougars (6-18, 6-8 NSIC) after recording a sweep in the first day of the series. This is the first series the Huskies have not won during NSIC play in the 2018 season.
GAME THREE SUMMARY (SCSU 1 | USF 3)
The Huskies' seven game winning streak would come to an end in a pitcher's duel that featured the ace from each team's staff. St. Cloud State's Dominic Austing logged four scoreless innings and struck out five. The junior only allowed four hits and two walks. He is expected to start against NSIC leading, Augustana in next week's mid-week series in Sioux Falls.
Sioux Falls' Dylan Gavin was lights out for the Cougars, throwing a complete game two-hitter. The freshman allowed one run, struck out two and walked four.
SCSU would scratch their lone run across in the fifth inning, when Aaron Hammann sent a double into center field that scored Ethan Ibarra.
Sioux Falls would respond the next inning, scoring three runs on a single, wild pitch and a fielder's choice.
Mitch Mallek and Aaron Hammann recorded the only two hits for the Huskies in the ballgame.
GAME FOUR SUMMARY (SCSU 9 | USF 10)
After falling behind by seven runs after four innings, the Huskies rallied back and scored six unanswered runs in the fifth and sixth innings to make the score 7-6 in favor of the Cougars going into the seventh. SCSU and USF would each score one in the seventh and the Huskies would put up two in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at nine a-piece. Sioux Falls would go on to push one unearned run in the top of the tenth that eventually became the game deciding run.
St. Cloud State did not play clean defense, recording seven errors and allowing six unearned runs. The Huskies also did not fully capitalize on opportunities at the plate, stranding 12 runners throughout the course of the game. Sioux Falls only stranded four and committed four errors.
The Huskies out-hit USF, 13-8 and drew seven walks compared to USF's two.
Highlights for the Huskies include a 3 RBI double off of the bat from Isaac Matchinsky that broke SCSU's silence at the plate in the fifth inning. The next inning, Mathew Meyer would send a three-run homerun to left field to bring the Huskies within one run.
After Sioux Falls would push across one from a sacrifice fly, Mathew Meyer would record his fourth RBI of the game to score Goplen and bring the Huskies' deficit to one, once again. A Cougar homerun in the eighth inning would give USF another one run advantage until Jordan Joseph and Mitch Mallek would each record a RBI in the eighth to tie the game at nine a-piece.
SCSU loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth with one out, but could not end the game.
St. Cloud State would allow the eventual game-winning run on-base from a fielding error in the top of the tenth. Another error would push across the run and give the Cougars a 10-9 advantage. SCSU threatened late when Mitch Mallek reached base on a USF error, but was eventually stranded at first to end the game.
Zach Iten (0-3) was the pitcher of record for the Huskies, however Iten did not allow an earned run or a walk while striking out one in his appearance in the tenth inning.
Matthew Osterberg was the starting pitcher for SCSU. The freshman went 2.1 innings and allowed two earned runs on four hits.
Ricardo Garcia would relieve Osterberg in the third. Garcia had a phenomenal outing, only allowing one run in 4.1 innings of work and striking out three.
Zach Siggelkow relieved Garcia in the seventh, then went 2.1 innings. Siggelkow struck out two and allowed one run on one hit.
