STORRS, CONN. - After a series of back-and-forth goals, the St. Cloud State women's hockey team (0-1-0, 0-0-0 WCHA) opened their regular season with a heartbreaking 2-3 overtime loss against the University of Connecticut Huskies (1-0-0, 0-0-0 Hockey East) in Storrs, Conn. Friday, Sep. 28.

The first goal of the game was a perfect way to open the season for sophomore forward, Megan Roe; at 10:38 of the first period Roe scored the first goal of her collegiate career. The assist came from Suvi Ollikainen.

While SCSU led for the remainder of the period and into the second, the East Coast Huskies tied the score at 1-1 with an even strength goal from junior forward, Catherine Crawley and an assist from Natalie Snodgrass at 17:41 of the second period.

St. Cloud rolled into the third period with some momentum after a goal 38 seconds past intermission. Huskies' captain Kayla Friesen put one in the back of the net with the help of line mate Laura Kluge. The other Huskies answered with a power play goal at 7:17 in the third. It was Crawley again, assisted by Snodgrass, who scored for UCONN. Regulation play was not enough to decide the first game of the year; the Huskies headed to overtime after a 2-2 tie at the end of three.

The overtime period did not last long as UCONN's freshman defender, Camryn Wong slid a goal past SCSU to end the game after 1:57 of OT. Wong was assisted by Nora MacClaine. Game one in the Battle of the Huskies went to UCONN.

Final shots on goal were SCSU 36, UCONN 35. St. Cloud goaltender Janine Alder made 32 saves, Morgan Fisher had 34 saves for Connecticut. St. Cloud went 0-1 on the power play, UCONN went 1-5.

The Huskies look to bounce back when they take on UCONN once against tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. cst.
