The St. Cloud State University soccer team (0-1-1, 0-0-0 NSIC) will continue its 2018 season with a trip to Missouri on Thursday, Sept. 6 for a 3 p.m. meeting against #1 ranked the University of Central Missouri (2-0-0) in Warrensburg, Mo.
SCSU will then open its 2018 home schedule with a 7 p.m. date on Sunday, Sept. 9 at Husky Stadium against NSIC rival Minnesota Duluth (1-2, 0-0 NSIC). Tickets for the match at Husky Stadium will be available at the gate and all SCSU students are admitted FREE to all regular season home games in 2018. SCSU SOCCER CONNECTIONS:
The Huskies will face the nation's #1 ranked team, Central Missouri (2-0-0), on Thursday, Sept. 6 in Warrensburg, Mo. Last year, SCSU lost a close 2-0 decision against Central Missouri in St. Cloud, Minn. SCSU is 2-5 in action against Central Missouri in the all-time series that started in 1997. Central Missouri scored a 3-2 win over SW Oklahoma State on Aug. 30 and a 3-2 OT win over Augustana on Sept. 2.
SCSU opened its 2018 season with a 2-1 setback at Northern Michigan on Aug. 30. The Huskies completed the weekend in the Upper Penisula with a 2-2 tie at Michigan Tech on Sept. 1.
Maria KassMaria Kass led the Huskies in the match at MTU with two goals in the game. She now has 22 goals scored during her four years in St. Cloud and currently ranks third in the team records for career goals and fifth with 51 career points. Chris Fleischer is the all-time SCSU goal leader with 46 from 1995 to 1999, while Ann Hultgren ranks second in the team records with 30 goals from 1996 to 1999.
Kelli Santo Paulo added her first assist of the season against MTU, while rookie goalkeeper Zoe Welsh also added her first collegiate point with an assist on Kass' goal against MTU. Welsh had eight saves in the nets for the Huskies in the game, which was her first start at SCSU. The assist was Santo Paulo's fifth during her career at SCSU.
In the match at NMU, SCSU's lone goal was scored by Grace Butler. The goal was Butler's first as a collegiate player. She is a rookie from Lakeville North H.S.
Last year, SCSU lost a 1-0 match at Minnesota Duluth. The last time SCSU played UMD in St. Cloud, the Huskies and Bulldogs battled to a 0-0 tie in OT.
2018-19 marks the 50th year of women's athletics at SCSU. The first year of intercollegiate competition for the Huskies was in 1968-69 and since that time the women's athletic program at SCSU has grown to 12 teams. The Huskies' soccer team played its first season of competition during the 1994 season under the leadership of coach Colleen Edwards.
SCSU head coach Gretta Arvesen begins her fifth season with the Huskies in 2018. She is assisted this year by Tarynn Theilig Johnson and Lauren Sherry.
On the horizon, SCSU will play at Bemidji State on Sept. 14 and at Minnesota Crookston on Sept. 16.
