Zugel’s deflection in 68th minute seals victory and snaps Mavericks 36-game home unbeaten streak against NSIC opponents
MANKATO, Minn. – St. Cloud State Women's Soccer (13-1-4, 11-1-3 NSIC) earned its statement win of the season to-date in the regular season finale, upending and handing No. 2 Minnesota State (15-1-2, 13-1-1 NSIC) its first loss of the season in a 1-0 victory on Thursday in Mankato. With the win, the Huskies clinched at least a tie for second in the NSIC standings to end the regular season.
In the win, SCSU set single season program records for most conference wins and most shutouts in a season with 11 and 10, respectively. The 13 wins for the season are the second-most in a single season, matching its 1995 total and one off its program record 14 wins in 2023.
TURNING POINT
SCSU thought it found the back of the net at the 20th minute in the first half but after video review, it was determined the Huskies were offside. The first 45 minutes were dominated by SCSU, with the Huskies outshooting the Mavericks, 10-2 and a 3-2 edge in corner kicks, but both teams were held scoreless at the break.
However, the Huskies seized its opportunity in the 68th minute on a free kick from just outside the box. Sophomore midfielder Darby Allen (Minnetonka, Minn.) took the set piece and fed a shot to the net that was deflected by redshirt sophomore Gabby Zugel (Plainwell, Mich.) and into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. Redshirt sophomore Jaylee Strickland (Columbus, Ohio) then made two of her four saves in the game's final 12 minutes to preserve the shutout and victory of the Huskies.
