MADISON, WI – The St. Cloud State University Huskies women's hockey team (8-17-2, 3-13-0 WCHA) were defeated in a five-goal shutout by the #1 University of Wisconsin Badgers (22-3-0, 12-3-0 WCHA) at LaBahn Arena Friday, Jan. 25.
The Badgers came out strong in the first period of play. Alexis Mauermann scored first for UW five minutes into the game. Then at 11:36 of the game, Sophia Shaver put the Badgers up 2-0. Shaver was assisted by Annie Pankowski and Mauermann, which was senior forward Pankowski's 100th assist of her career.
After creating a brick wall in front of her net for 19:45 of the second period, the Badgers snuck another through SCSU goaltender Emma Polusny giving UW the 3-0 lead heading into the final period.
Wisconsin scored two quick goals within the first minute and six seconds of the final period. That would be plenty to finish the game with a final score of 5-0 UW.
St. Cloud State's Polusny stopped 39 shots in the game; the Badger's Kristen Campbell had 14 saves in her fifth shutout of the year. Final shots on goal from today's game were SCSU 14, UW 44. St. Cloud went 0-1 on the power play and 2-2 on the penalty kill.
The Huskies play the Badgers again tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 26 at 6:07 p.m. at LaBahn Arena in Madison.
