Women's Hockey falls 1-5 against Gophers in Minnesota Cup final

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University Huskies women's hockey team (7-16-2, 2-12-0 WCHA) fell 5-1 in the championship game of the first ever WCHA Minnesota Cup against the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers (19-2-1, 9-2-1 WCHA) at Ridder Arena.
The Gophers took an early 2-0 lead in the first period with a goal a piece from Taylor Wente and Taylor Heise in the first six minutes. Minnesota added one more at 8:36 of the second period.
St. Cloud's Abby Thiessen scored her second goal of the tournament to open the scoring for SCSU at 9:32 of the second period. Thiessen was assisted by Laura Kluge.
Fourty-eight second into the third period, Minnesota regained their three-goal lead. Heise would add one more for the Gophers with an empty-net goal to end the game 5-1 for the Minnesota Cup championship win.
St. Cloud State goaltender Janine Alder stopped 45 shots in the game; the Gophers' Sydney Scobee had 22 saves. Final shots on goal from today's game were SCSU 23, MINN 50. St. Cloud went 0-3 on the power play and 2-3 on the penalty kill.
The Huskies return home to the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center January 18 for a 3:07 p.m. matchup against WCHA opponent, the Minnesota State Mavericks.
