BROOKINGS, S.D. – The St. Cloud State University women's track and field team did not waste any time getting the 2019-20 season started. The Huskies put together several strong individual performances at South Dakota State's Holiday Invite in Brookings, South Dakota, vaulting the team to a fifth place finish with 28 total team points.
Several St. Cloud State student-athletes scored at SDSU's Holiday Classic, including sprinters Emma Baynes (Mankato, Minn. / Mankato East) and Emelia Burris (Woodale, Ill. / Fenton). The two sprinters both qualified for finals in the 60m dash with such eight second times in both prelims and finals. Baynes ended up finishing fourth, earning five points towards the Huskies overall team score, with a PR time of 7.69 while Burris came in eighth with a time of 7.88.
Baynes success continued in the 200m dash, where she carded a third place in the event with a time of 25.24. Like in the 60m dash, Baynes was the highest Division II finisher in the event, as she placed ahead of runners from Augustana and her own teammates as well as Division I runners from Minnesota and South Dakota State. Finishing three places behind Baynes was teammate Cassidy Lackovic (Lake in the Hill, Ill. / Huntley), who earned three points towards St. Cloud State's overall score with a sixth place finish and a time of 26.02.
Like Baynes, Burris' success on the track carried over to the field, as she finished fifth in the long jump at 5.43 meters. Maya Taylor (Oswego, Ill. / Oswego East) and Abby Jungwirth (Forest Lake, Minn. / Forest Lake) also found success in triple jump, as they both recorded top-8 finishes in the event. Taylor came in fifth with a jump of 11.18 meters while Jungwirth was right behind in sixth with her jump of 11.14 meters.
Faith Lubner (Reedsville, Wis. / Reedsville) started her season on the right foot, as she scored a sixth place finish in pentathlon with a score of 3377. The junior recorded top-10 finishes in four of the five events, including a second place finish in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.94. That time currently ranks second in the NSIC and 26th in the nation, while Lubner's overall score of 3377 also ranks second in the conference and 18th in Division II.
Thanks to these and several other strong performances, the Huskies finished in fifth place as a team with 28 total points. St. Cloud State will return to action on January 18, as the team travels to Superior, Wisconsin for the Twins Ports Open and UW-Superior.
