Women's hockey falls to #9 Ohio State at home

ST. CLOUD, MINN. – After a week of below freezing temperatures and an odd practice schedule, the St. Cloud State University Huskies women's hockey team (8-19-2, 3-15-0 WCHA) lost their third straight game to #9 Ohio State University Buckeyes (15-11-0, 9-9-0 WCHA) at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center Friday, Feb. 1.

Ohio State's Rebecca Freiburger scored first at 9:42 of the opening period after a flurry of skaters got into the blue paint and the Huskies' goaltender lost track of the puck.

The score remained 1-0 through the second period as each goaltender saw plenty of action at both ends of the ice. Saves after the second period were 32 for St. Cloud and 18 for Ohio State.

OSU was able to extend their lead early in the third when Paetyn Levis scored just over a minute into the period. The Buckeyes would add two more before the end of the game to secure a 4-0 win in St. Cloud.

St. Cloud State's goaltender Emma Polusny stopped 49 shots in the game; the Buckeye's Andrea Braendli had 22 saves. Final shots on goal from today's game were SCSU 22, OSU 53. St. Cloud went 0-3 on the power play and 0-1 on the penalty kill.

"We were not prepared very well today and we've got to do a lot better tomorrow," said Huskies' Head Coach Eric Rud. "For how we [played] tonight, it was one to nothing going into the third and we have a lot more to give and need to be a lot sharper tomorrow." The teams will rematch tomorrow in St. Cloud with a 2:07 p.m. start time.
