MADISON, WI – The St. Cloud State University Huskies women's hockey team (10-23-2, 5-19-0 WCHA / 0-1-0 POSTSEASON) were taken down in game one of the WCHA Quarterfinal by the University of Wisconsin Badgers (28-4-2, 18-4-2 WCHA / 1-0-0 POSTSEASON) at LaBahn Arena on Friday, March 1.
Two Badger goals in less than a minute of each other during the first period put the Huskies in a tough spot battling against #2 Wisconsin. The first goal from UW's Emily Clark came at 6:16 of the period, followed by goal two at 7:02.
"We got through the first five minutes and everything was fine, then after [those two goals] it's a little hard to recover from that," said St. Cloud State's Head Coach Eric Rud.
In the second period, the Badger's Britta Curl scored her second goal of the game and put them at a three-goal advantage over the Huskies. The third period saw two more goals from Wisconsin to make the final score 5-0.
St. Cloud State's goaltender Janine Alder stopped 44 shots in the game; the Badger's Kristen Campbell had 13 saves for her eighth shutout of the season. Final shots on goal from today's game were SCSU 13, UW 49. St. Cloud went 0-1 on the power play and 1-1 on the penalty kill.
"[Janine] always gives a consistent effort," said Rud. "There was nothing she could do [to make the save on a couple shots], but she certainly gave us everything she had tonight."
St. Cloud State will take on the Badgers again tomorrow at LaBahn Arena with a 3:07 p.m. start time in the WCHA Quarterfinals best-of-three series.
"We treat it the same as everything else," on moving forward to tomorrow's game two, Rud commented. "All year long one of the positives we've had is our ability to bounce back. We've consistently done it and I would expect nothing different tomorrow."
