All-NSIC finishes highlight Outdoor Championship

DULUTH, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University track and field team could not have asked for a better weekend at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Huskies traveled to Duluth, Minnesota and brought home plenty of hardware, including a ninth place finish as a team with 40 points thanks to multiple top-8 performances from the team's student-athletes.
St. Cloud State was led on the opening day by Emelia Burris (Wooddale, Ill. / Fenton), who earned All-NSIC honors with an outstanding performance in long jump. The sophomore earned a third place finish in the event thanks to her jump of 5.78 meters. Burris also scored points for the Huskies in the 100m and 200m dashes, as she finished qualified for finals and finished top-8 in both races. In the 100m, Burris clocked in at 11.91 for a fifth place finish, and she just missed her second All-Conference performance of the weekend in the 200m, as she came in fourth with a time of 24.77.
Emma Baynes (Mankato, Minn. / Mankato East) also had an impressive weekend for the Huskies, as she finished in the top-8 in both the 100m and 200m dashes. The sophomore took eighth in the 100m dash with a time of 12.16 before recording another eighth place finish in the 200 with a time of 25.13.
St. Cloud State earned points in the 4x100 relay as well, as the team of Bridget Brown (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River), Baynes, Maya Taylor (Oswego, Ill. / Oswego East) and Burris carded a seventh place finish with a time of 47.76.
Additionally, the Huskies got points from Jocelyn Johnson (Lakeville, Minn. / Lakeville South) in high jump and Kalli Jo Klocke (Hayfield, Minn. / Hayfield) in pole vault. Johnson technically finished in the three-way tie for sixth in high jump but ended up in eighth after a jump off thanks to her jump of 1.60m. Klocke also finished in a tie for sixth in pole vault with her 3.21m performance.
Dominique Buechel (Chilton, Wis. / Chilton) made the podium in discus, as her throw of 45.48 was good enough for sixth place.
Chrissy Lofgren (Stewartville, Minn. / Stewartville) just missed a podium appearance in the 3000m steeplechase, as she came in ninth with a time of 11:23.85. Teammates Jamie Herridge (Medota, Minn. / Little Falls) and Isabella Kraft (Bismarck, N.D. / Bismark) also competed in the race, finishing with times of 12:30.95 and 12:43.93.
Multiple other Huskies competed over the weekend. In the distance events, Annika Juenemann (Eyota, Minn. / Dover-Eyota) finished twelfth in the 10,000m run with a time of 41:11.31, while Autum Shurbert-Hetzel (Stevens Point, Wis. / Stevens Point Area) and Clara Welhouse (Green Bay, Wis. / Southwest) competed in the 800m run. Shurbert-Hetzel finished in 14th with a time of 2:22.05, while Welhouse came in 18th with a time of 2:24.64.
In the hurdle events, Faith Lubner (Reedsville, Wis. / Reedsville) followed up her All-NSIC performance in the heptathlon with a tenth place finish in the 100m hurdles (14.78). The sophomore also finished tenth in long jump with a jump of 5.41m. Bridget Brown (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) just missed the top-8 in the 400m hurdles, as she came in ninth with a time of 1:04.32, while teammate Leighten Fischer (Iola, Wis. / Iola-Scandanavia) finished in 14th with a time of 1:05.30.
Claire Shea (Victoria, Minn. / Chanhassen) made her NSIC Outdoor Championship debut with a 19th place finish in high jump with a jump of 1.52m. Abby Jungwirth (Forest Lake, Minn. / Forest Lake) and Mauria Oldham (Chicago, Ill. / Lincoln Park) both competed in long jump, and finished in 15th and 28th respectively with jumps of 5.33m and 4.98m. Additionally, Jungwirth finished tenth in triple jump with a jump of 11.44m while Taylor finished 14th at 11.25m.
Dacoda Zimmerman (Racine, Wis. / Horlick) and Annie Falardeau (Grand Rapids, Minn. / Grand Rapids) finished back-to-back in shot put, finishing in 14th and 15th with throws of 12.52m and 12.50m.
Thanks to these and several other impressive performances, St. Cloud State finished in ninth place as a team with a total of 40 points. The University of Mary won the NSIC Outdoor Track and Field Championship as a team with 192.50.
The Huskies will see if any individuals qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship, which will take place May 23-25 in Kingsville, Texas.
