WINONA, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University men's basketball team has not been the most fortunate on Saturdays. In fact, the Huskies entered Saturday evening's Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) contest against Winona State University with a 0-4 record on that particular day in the month of January. Against the Warriors, St. Cloud State was finally able to turn the tides, as the Huskies used 14 points in overtime to prevail for a 90-83 win.
St. Cloud State entered the locker room at halftime holding a slim 39-32 lead over host Winona State thanks in large part to another dominant scoring performance from senior guard Trevon Marshall (Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township). Marshall accounted for 16 of the Huskies 39 first half points, leading the way with a .727 shooting percentage from the floor. His hot hand helped St. Cloud State shoot 16-26 (.615) from the floor during the opening 20 minutes of play, a clip the team hasn't seen in many Saturdays.
The Huskies were also strong defensively in the first half, as they held Winona State to a .452 shooting percentage, including a .200 mark from three-point range. However, the Warriors offense hit its stride in the second half, as they outscored St. Cloud State 44-37, resulting in a 76-76 tie at the end of regulation.
The two teams would use a five minute overtime to determine the victor, a situation the Huskies were not familiar with this 2019-20 season. Though St. Cloud State and Winona State have historically played several overtime games in history, the Huskies had yet to play and extra period this season, having won or lost all their games in regulation. St. Cloud State did not look like OT novices, as the team outscored the Warriors 14-7 to defeat Winona State by a final score of 90-83.
Marshall ended as the game's leading scorer and rebounder, putting together an impressive double-double with 29 points, 11 rebounds and four assists in 43 minutes of work. Joining him in double-digits were Anthony Roberts (Chicago, Ill. / Oak Park), Ilya Tyrtyshnik (Kyiv, Ukraine / Kyiv Specialized School #49) and Caleb Donaldson (Bloomington, Ill. / Bloomington), who all scored 10+ points for the Huskies Saturday evening. Roberts concluded his weekend with 20 points against the Warriors, while Tyrtyshnik and Donaldson recorded 13 and 11 points respectively.
With the win, St. Cloud State's overall record improves to 12-10 and the team is now 9-7 in NSIC play. The Huskies will resume action on Friday, February 7 when they host Wayne State College at 7:30 p.m. in Halenbeck Hall.
