Huskies to close season at Bemidji State, Minnesota-Crookston

ST. CLOUD, MINN. – It was a whirlwind of a weekend for the St. Cloud State University women's basketball team. The Huskies were once again double victories in their final regular season games at Halenbeck Hall, defeating MSU-Moorhead and Northern State in two tightly contested Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) games. This weekend, St. Cloud State will close the 2019-20 regular season on the road, as the team faces Bemidji State University Friday and the University of Minnesota-Crookston Saturday.
Thanks to their two wins last weekend, the Huskies have clinched a top-3 spot in the NSIC Tournament, which is slated to begin on Wednesday, February 26. Before the team can worry about its playoff hopes, though, St. Cloud State still needs to get through this last weekend of the regular season. Despite the two teams overall and conference records, Bemidji State and Minnesota-Crookston have proven to be formidable opponents in NSIC play. In fact, the Beavers gave the Huskies a run for their money in the first meeting, as it took a late fourth quarter run by St. Cloud State to really put Bemidji State way in the 65-53 victory.
Friday's contest at Bemidji will start at 5:30 p.m., and tip off at the Golden Eagles on Saturday is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Live stats, video and WJON's live radio broadcast will be available for fans who can't make the trek, and score updates can be found on the team's official Twitter page (@SCSUHUSKIES_WBB).
Here are the five things to know before the final weekend of the regular season:
16 – With their wins over the Dragons and Wolves last weekend, the Huskies officially secured their best record in NSIC play since joining the conference in 2008. The 16 wins against NSIC opponents count as the most in program history and are the most conference wins St. Cloud State has compiled at any points in its history, including play in the North Central Conference (NCC).
939 – Senior guard Madelin Dammann (Waconia, Minn. / Waconia) has made quite a name for herself throughout her career with the Huskies. Entering the final regular season games of her career, Dammann currently ranks third all-time in three-point shooting percentage (.405) and ranks top-10 all-time in both three-pointers made and three-pointers attempted. It should come as no surprise, then, that the senior is just 21 points away from 1000. Thanks to a huge second half surge, in which she's scored in double-digits 10 times, Dammann has scored 939 points in her Huskies career, meaning she needs just 21 to reach the mark this upcoming weekend.
20.5/5.0/2.0/1.5 – Dammann isn't the only one putting up huge numbers for St. Cloud State this season. Junior forward Nikki Kilboten (Eau Claire, Wis. / North) is having herself a career year as well, averaging a career-high 13.0 points per game thanks to .484 shooting from the floor. Last weekend, it was Kilboten who led the Huskies in scoring, as she averaged 20.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.0 blocks and 1.5 steals in two key wins for St. Cloud State. In fact, the junior accounted for 41% of the Huskies defense in their 69-64 win over Northern State, as she scored 28 of the team's 69 points during the game.
2-0 – St. Cloud State was victories in its previous meetings with Minnesota-Crookston and Bemdiji State, as the team won both games on its home court in early January. In the weekend opener against the Golden Eagles, the Huskies saw five players (Kilboten, Dammann, Katrina Theis, Brehna Evans, Kelsey Peschel) score in double-digits en route to a 69-48 win. Saturday was a bit of a different story. After falling behind 16-10, St. Cloud State used a big second half to defeat the Beavers 65-53 and kickstart a historic win-streak that would last well into February.
10.8/5.5/.508 - The Huskies overall and conference record is impressive this season, and it becomes even more impressive when you find out they've put it together without one of their best players. Sophomore forward Katrina Theis (Maple Grove, Minn. / Maple Grove) has not played in a game since January 18, 2020 when she scored 18 points in a key win over Minnesota State. The sophomore was averaged 10.8 points a game thanks to her .508 field goal percentage and was pulling in 5.5 rebounds a game before her injury and has been sidelined ever since.
