CROOKSTON, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University men's basketball team ended the 2019-20 regular season on a high note Saturday afternoon. After suffering three consecutive Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) losses, the Huskies snapped their streak in dominating fashion, as they cruised to an 89-77 victory over the University of Minnesota-Crookston.
St. Cloud State and Minnesota-Crookston were deadlocked in an intense battle in the first half of play, as the Huskies held a slim 43-41 advantage heading into the locker room at half. It was the second half, though, where St. Cloud State's offense really came to life. Seniors Oliver Ehrnvall (Uppsala, Sweden / Mahattan) and Jake Mussman (St. Cloud, Minn. / Tech) opened the second 20 minutes of play with back-to-back layups, extending the Huskies lead to 49-43 just two minutes in. Those back-to-back layups were enough to jump start St. Cloud State's offense, as the team extended its lead to eight points and then 10, as a layup by Anthony Roberts (Chicago, Ill. / Oak Park) gave the team a 58-48 lead with 14:56 left in the game.
From there, it was pretty much all Huskies all the time, as the team led by as many as 20 minutes with under 10 minutes left in regulation. Though the Golden Eagles put together a late offensive surge of their own, it wasn't enough to catch St. Cloud State as the team closed the season with a 89-77 victory.
Five Huskies scored in double-digits Friday afternoon, including the three seniors. Trevon Marshall (Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) led the way scoring wise, as he tallied 31 assists to go along with a team leading-nine assists and nine rebounds. Ehrnvall scored a career-high 17 points on 7-12 shooting, while Mussman and Ilya Tyrtyshnik (Kyiv, Ukraine / Kyiv Specialized School #49) scored 10 and 11 points respectively. Caleb Donaldson (Bloomington, Ill. / Bloomington) added 13 points as well.
With the win, St. Cloud State closes the regular season with an overall record of 14-14 and an 11-11 record in NSIC play. The Huskies season is not over, though, as they are scheduled to face Augustana in the opening round of the NSIC tournament on Wednesday, February 26. The game is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m. in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
