Records fall at Maverick Invite

MANKATO, MINN. – It's not every day the St. Cloud State University track and field team sees a school record fall at a meet. On Friday, February 21, the Huskies saw it happen not once, but twice. Thanks to strong performances by junior sprinter Emma Baynes (Mankato, Minn. / East) and several other student-athletes, St. Cloud State put together a strong showing at the Maverick Invite, finishing fifth as a team with 62.50 total points.
Baynes had herself a day on the track, as she broke two school records and ran an NCAA provisional time at the Maverick Invite. In the 60m dash, Baynes ran the fastest time of anyone in prelims, as her time of 7.61 not only broke the school record but was also an NCAA Division II provisional mark, as she currently ranks 23rd in the nation in the event. Baynes additionally broke the school record in the 200, as she won the race behind a personal record (PR) time of 25.14 seconds.
Emelia Burris (Wood dale, Ill. / Fenton) also had a strong day at the Maverick Invite, earning season best performances in multiple events for the Huskies. In the 60m dash, Burris ran a season best time of 7.76 second to qualify for finals, but her best performance of the day came in long jump. The senior won the event behind a jump of 5.68 meters, earning 10 points toward the overall team score and moving up the national rankings to No. 34 in the nation.
St. Cloud State also saw student-athletes record PRs in the 600m dash, as Bridgit Brown (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) raced to a sixth place finish thanks to a PR time of 1:38.71. The Huskies also had runners score in the 400m dash, as Makayla Rice (Racine, Wis. / Horlick), Kaylee Gessay (Waukesha, Wis. / Waukesha South) and Leighten Fischer (Iola, Wis. / Iola-Scandanavia) finished fourth, sixth and seventh in the race respectively.
St. Cloud State saw plenty of success in the distance events as well, as two student-athletes placed in the 800m run. First year Anna Tomovic finished in fifth place with a time of 2:24.26 while Autum Shurbert-Hetzel (Stevens Point, Wis. / Stevens Point Area) finished sixth with a time of 2:25.37.
In addition to Burris, several Huskies found success in field events. In long jump, Abby Jungwirth (Forest Lake, Minn. / Forest Lake) joined her teammate in the top-3, as she recorded a third place finish with a PR jump of 5.43 meters. Then, in triple jump, Maya Taylor (Oswego, Ill. / Oswego East) finished in fourth behind a season best jump of 11.51 meters.
St. Cloud State also saw individuals place in high jump and shout put. Sophomore dual sport athlete Claire Shea (Excelsior, Minn. / Chanhassen) placed fifth in high jump behind a mark of 1.53 meters, while Dominque Buechel (Chilton, Wis. / Chilton) finished fifth in shot put behind a mark of 12.46 meters.
Thanks to these and several other strong performances, the Huskies finished in fifth as a team with 62.50 total points. St. Cloud State will next compete at the NSIC Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Minnesota State February 28-29.
