BISMARCK, N.D. - When the St. Cloud State University women's basketball team is on, it is one of the top teams in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC), especially on defense.
The Huskies were most definitely on Friday evening.
After a wild week that included a cancelled road trip, a boatload of new plans and traveling in blizzard like conditions, St. Cloud State earned a hard fought win at the University of Mary, defeating its hosts by a final score of 60-41.
It looked like the third consecutive meeting between the Huskies and Marauders would be as close as the previous one after the first quarter, as the two teams played to a hardfought 11-11 tie after the opening 10 minutes. That was simply a little extra warm up time for St. Cloud State, as the team outscored Mary 21-10 in the second quarter and closed the half with a 31-21 advantage. Tori Wortz (Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson) led the way with eight points for the Huskies, while Brehna Evans (De Pere, Wis. / West De Pere) and Erin Navratil (Albany, Minn. / Albany) contributed three rebounds each.
The 10 point lead proved to be enough for St. Cloud State, as the team continued to shut down the Marauders through the third and fourth quarters. Though the Huskies did surrender 14 third quarter points, they held host Mary to just .181 shooting in the fourth and final quarter, allowing them to close the game with an impressive 60-41 victory.
Katrina Theis (Maple Grove, Minn. / Maple Grove) ended as the game's leading scorer, thanks to her near perfect shooting performance. The junior put together her best offensive performance of the season, scoring a team-leading 13 points on 6-8 shooting. Nikki Kilboten (Eau Claire, Wis. / Eau Claire North) and Evans both scored in double-digits, tallying 11 and 10 points respectively, while Wortz concluded the game with eight points and a season-high seven assists. Navratil was the team's leading rebounder with six.
With the win, St. Cloud State's overall record improves to 3-2 and the team is still 1-1 in NSIC North Division play. The Huskies will resume action on Saturday, January 16, as they take on the Marauders yet again in another nonconferene game. Tip off is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Bismarck, North Dakota.
