ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Women's Hockey kicks off 2021-22 Western Collegiate Hockey Association play with a two-game home series at No. 1 Wisconsin this weekend. Puck drop at La Bahn Arena is set for 2:00 p.m. CST on both Saturday and Sunday, October 9-10.
Coverage of both games can be heard on 97.5 FM RadioX with Sam Goetzinger and Rachel Herzog on the call, as well as live streams on B1G+ for subscribers.
The Huskies opened up the regular season last weekend with a sweep over Lindenwood, earning 4-2 victories on both Friday and Saturday. Emma Polusny and Sanni Ahola showed well in their respective wins, combining for 58 saves at a .935 rate. SCSU's top line of Taylor Lind (1-3-4), Jenniina Nylund (1-2-3) and Emma Gentry (2-0-2) combined to go plus-eight on the weekend, while Dayle Ross impressed in her debut weekend on the blue line with seven blocks as she skated to a plus-two. Olivia Cvar (1-1-2) and McKenna Wesloh (1-1-2) each added multi-point weekends against Lindenwood. Winning puck battles was a theme of the Huskies' sweep, as McKenzie Bourgerie won 26 of 31 draws and Nylund gained possession of 37 draws at a 67.2% win percentage.
Reigning National Champion Wisconsin is off to a 4-0-0 start to 2021-22, sweeping Lindenwood and Merrimack in road series across the last two weekends. Makenna Webster (4-9-13) is the Badgers' point leader through four games, Casey O'Brien has netted nine goals and added two assists while last season's USCHO Player of the Year Darryl Watts has posted nine points on two goals and seven assists. Goaltender Kennedy Blair has gone 3-0-0 in her three starts, working 159:49 of scoreless hockey with 38 saves.
The weekend series serves as a homecoming for Huskies associate head coach Jinelle Siergiej and assistant coach Molly Engstrom, as both enjoyed historic playing careers at the University of Wisconsin.
St. Cloud State will continue their WCHA schedule next weekend with a home-and-home series against St. Thomas, playing in Mendota Heights on Friday, October 15 before returning to the HBNHC for Homecoming on October 16 at 1:00 p.m. CST.
