
Huskies Discus thrower Dominique Buechel headed to 2021 NCAA Outdoor Championships

St. Cloud State Women's Track & Field thrower Dominique Buechel is officially headed to the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Championships held at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan on May 27-29 as announced by the NCAA on Tuesday. Ranked No. 6 in the Nation in the Discus with a 52.21m high mark, Buechel will be one of the national competitors in the event.
Buechel won the NSIC Discus Championship last weekend at the NSIC Championships in Duluth, becoming the Huskies' first Outdoor event winner since Becky Schmidt took first in the 100 Meter Dash at the 2013 NSIC Championships and the first overall since Natalie Gottschalk earned the top podium in the 2018 Indoor Pentathlon. She also established new St. Cloud State program records in both the Discus and Hammer Throw (52.60m) this season, both marks coming in SCSU's regular-season finale at the Maverick Classic en route to earning NSIC Field Athlete of the Week honors.
The Huskies have sent at least one student-athlete to five of the last six Women's NCAA Outdoor Championships. Patience Yalarti earned All-American laurels in the 2015 Triple Jump, Sam Sunstrom represented SCSU at the 2016 10,000 Meter Run, then the duo competed again at the 2017 Outdoor Championships with Sunstrom earning All-American status. Natalie Gottschalk was the last Huskies athlete to earn a bid to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, placing 13th in the 2019 Heptathlon.
