Matthew Willert nabs first career double-double with 24 points, 10 rebounds
WINONA, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University men's basketball team dropped its weekend finale in Winona, Minnesota. Despite a strong start offensively, the Huskies were unable to overcome an early run by Winona State, resulting in a 94-72 loss. Matthew Willlert (Buffalo, Minn. / Buffalo) led St. Cloud State in points (24) and rebounds (10), and the team is now 8-8 overall and 4-5 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play.
GAME SUMMARY
The first half was a story of a hot and cold St. Cloud State team. When the Huskies offense was hot, they were hard to beat, as they were making contested shots from all over the court. When St. Cloud State was cold, however, the offense was cold as ice, going minutes at a time without scoring a basket, allowing Winona State to take a 45-25 lead with 5:00 remaining in the first half. The Huskies, though, chipped away at the Warriors lead, whittling it down to 45-31 by halftime.
St. Cloud State tried to make up the gap in the second half, opening with baskets from Caleb Donaldson (Bloomington, Ill. / Bloomington) and Matthew Willert (Buffalo, Minn. / Buffalo). The defense, though, was unable to stop Winona State, resulting in a 94-72 loss.
TOP HUSKIES
- Matthew Willert (Buffalo, Minn. / Buffalo) set new career highs Saturday afternoon in both points and rebounds. The sophomore also tallied the first double-double of his St. Cloud State career with 24 points and 10 rebounds.
- Anthony Roberts (Chicago, Ill. / Oak Park) tallied his sixth double-double of the season, scoring 16 points with 10 rebounds.
UP NEXT
St. Cloud State will hit the road again next weekend, as the team travels to Wayne State and Augustana. Tip off in Wayne, Nebraska is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
