Huskies Two Goals Not Enough in 3-2 Loss to Davenport

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - St. Cloud State men's soccer closed a historic season Sunday afternoon in Grand Rapids, MI. The Huskies fought tooth and nail with the Davenport Panthers but fell 3-2 in the quarterfinals of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament. All five goals of the game were scored in the second half. Davenport netted the first goal of the game early in the second. At the 71st minute Owen Worsdell received a feed from Zinedine Kroeten to net the Huskies first mark of the match to make it a one goal game. Vukota Mastilovic headed a pass from Rhys Ward in the back of the net at the 81st minute to tie the match 2-2. Shortly after, Davenport netted their third goal to take the lead 3-2 lead. Gage Steiner made seven saves on the day.Â

QUOTABLES - Head Coach Sean Holmes
"I was really proud of the effort we put in today. We were 0-0 at halftime and I thought the longer the game went, the better shape we would be in. We gave up a early second half goal and with our new maturity and composure we stood strong. We then went down 2-0 and our team a month ago would have maybe collapsed. Instead we showed some real grit and resilience and battled back on two good goals by Owen Worsdell and Vukota Mastilovic. I was really pleased. We had a couple of good chances late in the game to grab the win. Their Player of the Year candidate, Matt Whelan finished a terrific chance. I thought Nolan Pratumwon and Rhys Ward were good in the midfield. Gage Steiner in his last game representing the Huskies was absolutely terrific and he came up with a couple of game changing saves. We will miss him. Vukota Mastilovic and Noah Eklund were both very good at center defense. We had some really attacking moments of quality from Zinedine Kroeten, Philip Caputo, and Owen Worsdell. I think making the playoffs is something of a milestone for our program. Now the next step is wining some games and truly challenging for the conference championship and a place in the NCAA tournament. We return every starter expect Gage Steiner next year. Hopefully everyone will be a year older, wiser, and stronger. After taking some time off we will get back to work and work on making the 2023 team even better!"
