SCSU one of three teams with two representatives, tandem are two of 41 watch lists nominees
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey's goaltender tandem of junior Dominic Basse (Alexandria, Va.) and senior Jaxon Castor (Phoenix, Ariz.) were both named to the Mike Richter Award Watch list, as announced by the Hockey Commissioners Association (HCA) on Thursday. The Richter Award is awarded annually to the top goaltender in NCAA Division I men's hockey. Basse and Castor are two of 41 goalies named to the watch list and two of seven to hail from the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC). St. Cloud State is one of three schools – Mercyhurst and Connecticut – to have two goaltenders named to the watch list.
A committee of voters — made up of a cross section of coaches, administrators, scouts and media — will pare this list down to approximately 15 names within the next three weeks and then ultimately choose the winner who will be announced in April during the NCAA Frozen Four.
Basse has made nine starts in net for the Huskies this season, recording a record of 7-2-0 with a 1.79 goals-against-average and .930 save percentage, marks which rank fourth and third, respectively, in the NCAA. Basse recorded shutouts in victories over St. Thomas (Oct. 2, 15 saves) and Colorado College (Nov. 19, 36 saves) and has allowed zero or one goal in five of nine starts this season. He was named the NCHC and HCA Goaltender of the Month in October and was named the NCHC Goaltender of the Week on Nov. 21.
Castor has made 11 starts and is 8-3-0 on the season with a 1.90 GAA and .927 S%, marks which rank eighth and fourth nationally, respectively. He was recently named the NCHC Goaltender of the Week on Monday (Jan. 9) after made 51 saves with a 0.96 goals-against-average and a .962 save percentage in a series split with then-No. 3/1 Minnesota. His 23-save shutout in a 3-0 victory over the Gophers on Jan. 8 was St. Cloud State's first against Minnesota since March 16, 2001 (3-0 in St. Paul at WCHA Final Five) and the first time in 59 games the Gophers have been shutout.
St. Cloud State will return home to host Colorado College Jan. 13-14 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
