Foul trouble hits Huskies, second half momentum surge by SMSU pushes past SCSU
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The St. Cloud State women's basketball team season came to a bittersweet end Sunday afternoon. The Huskies fell 76-68 to Southwest Minnesota State in the NSIC Tournament quarterfinal game at the Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. A strong first half came undone by a late surge from SMSU and foul trouble to put SCSU behind. St. Cloud shot .415 from the field with three athletes scoring in the double-digit marks.
GAME SUMMARY
It was a fight right outta the gate between the two teams as Southwest edged an early 4-3 lead over the Huskies. The next three minutes would be scoreless for St. Cloud, but their defense held strong only giving up two points in that time frame. With 3:33 left in the first, Katrina Theis drove into the paint off a turnover putting the Huskies back on top 7-6. With 24 seconds left, Dru Henning hit a layup putting the Huskies up 14-10 but a last second three by SMSU would cut it to 14-13 after the first period.
The Huskies hit a snag just 20 seconds into the second as Tori Peschel was called for her third foul of the game forcing her to sit on the sidelines. Having to adjust to the change, St. Cloud's offense and defense went to work by going on a 13-2 run over the Mustangs to go up 27-15 during the first six minutes of the second period. SCSU would be stalled on a 7-0 run by SMSU cutting the Huskies lead to five, 27-22, with 2:31 left of the half. With 25 seconds left, Jada Eggebrecht drained a three off a pass by Theis putting the Huskies up 33-26. Once again, SMSU would just barely beat the clock to end the half. Going into the locker room, the Huskies led 33-28 at half. St. Cloud shot .444 going 12-27 in the first 20 minutes of play. Henning led the first half with nine points.
Once again foul trouble plagued the Huskies as Henning was given her third foul less than a minute into the third. From there, SCSU and SMSU would basically go shot-for-shot with the Mustangs edging to close the scoring gap. At the 4:21 mark, Southwest hit a three to tie the game up at 43. St. Cloud jumped back ahead after a jump shot by Jada Eggebrecht. With just under a minute left, T. Peschel would get hit with her fourth foul of the game forcing her to take a seat. For the third time, SMSU would hit a shot just before the buzzer while drawing a foul. It was bad luck for the Huskies as Henning was looking to take a charge but was called for the block which was her fourth foul. Going into the last period, SCSU would lead by just 55-52.
The start of the fourth quarter was not looking great for the Huskies as Henning fouled out just two minutes in as Southwest was capitalizing on their surge of momentum. The Mustangs pushed off SCSU's defense as they took over the lead on a 9-0 run going up 64-62 with six and half left with T. Peschel fouling out on a shooting foul. The loss of Henning and T. Peschel would shake up the Huskies as SMSU went on another 12-0 run making it a ten-point, 74-64, game with 2:43 left to play. St. Cloud could just not get anything going to close the gap as the clock ticked down. The Huskies put up a valiant effort, but their season would come to a close in the NSIC Tournament quarterfinal as they fell 76-68 to Southwest MN State. St. Cloud shot .385 from the field in the second with Theis putting up 14 points.
