Paola Brena skies for 1.74m mark in the High Jump as three Huskies score on day two
MANKATO, Minn. – St. Cloud State Track & Field closed the 2023 NSIC Indoor Championships with a 10th place finish with five athletes scoring in a total of six events. Parker Buske scored in both the Long and Triple Jump – taking fifth with an 11.79m mark in the latter event on Sunday – while Paola Brena and Julia Rowles landed second and fourth respectively in the High Jump. The Huskies have finished top-10 at the NSIC Indoor Championships in 14 of their 15 seasons as a member institution since joining the conference ahead of the 2008-09 season.
Ainhoa Toquero began the Huskies' effort on Sunday by scoring a personal-best 2,953 points in the Pentathlon, recording PR marks in the 60 Meter Hurdles, High Jump and 800 Meter. Toquero placed fifth in the multi's High Jump, clearing a personal record 1.59m.
In the program's lone running event on Sunday, Brooklyn Brouse scored with a fourth-place finish while Mariana Guerra-Reese added a seventh-place time in the 600 Meter Finals.
Dacoda Zimmerman earned a top-20 mark in the Shot Put to start the effort in the field, following by Parker Buske recording a 11.79m mark in the Triple Jump for fifth – scoring in her second event of the Championships. Destiny Baughman added a 11.11m leap in the Triple, placing 10th.
Paola Brena became the lone Huskies athlete to earn All-NSIC honors, clearing a season-best 1.74m in the High Jump to finish runner-up, while Julia Rowles placed fourth with a 1.65m clear. Brena's mark is an NCAA Provisional mark and puts her in a phenomenal position to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Quotables – St. Cloud State head coach Sam Kettenhofen
"It was a good meet for us. We competed well and did what we needed to do in some of our most important events. There were a few standout performances – we can leave very happy with our finishes in the High Jump, 600 Meter, Triple Jump and Long Jump."
On the strong conference meet for the jumpers… "Paola obviously had a great day, making 1.74m for second – that mark puts her eighth in the NCAA. She put it together when it mattered. I'm so thrilled and proud of Julia's performance – she was battling an injury all week so to finish fourth was a huge achievement. Parker had a really good weekend – I'm really happy with how it came together for her at the Championships. An indoor personal best in the long jump and a fifth-place finish in the triple jump is a great way to close out the indoor season."
