St. Cloud State Women’s Basketball Grinds Out Home Win

Sawicki’s double-double helps Huskies past Wayne State, 58-52
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Women's Basketball (9-6 overall, 6-5 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) used strong opening and closing quarters to take down Wayne State (4-11, 1-11 NSIC), 58-52 on Friday evening at Halenbeck Hall.
The Huskies took a commanding 21-4 lead after the first quarter behind seven points on a perfect 3-of-3 from the field including 1-of-1 from beyond the arc from senior forward Dru Henning (Mukwonago, Wis.) and six points on 2-of-3 from three-point land from freshman guard Alana Zarneke (Appleton, Wis.). SCSU went ice cold in the second quarter and was outscored by the Wildcats, 17-4 but held a 25-21 lead going into the break.
Wayne State outscored the Huskies again in the third quarter and the game went into the fourth quarter knotted at 38. St. Cloud State made three of its five three-point attempts and converted on nine of its 12 free throw attempts in the final ten minutes, pulling away to earn its second straight game.

The Huskies close their four game homestand tomorrow (Saturday, Jan. 20) against Augustana. The game will begin at 3:30 p.m. at Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud. - Sophomore forward Ashley Sawicki (Waunakee, Wis.) scored a game-high 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting, grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, dished out four assists, blocked two shots and recorded two steals.
- Sophomore guard Jada Eggebrecht (Phillips, Wis.) scored 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field including 2-of-5 from three.
- Henning and Zarneke each scored nine points.
- After the win, SCSU is now 10-13 all-time against Wayne State.
- SCSU led the game in field goal percentage (46.7%-33.3%), three-point percentage (31.8%-14.3%), field goals (21-17), three pointers (7-2), total rebounds (10-24—34 – 13-16—29), assists (15-11), blocks (3-2), second-chance points (10-9) and bench points (17-13).
- WSC led in free throw percentage (76.2%-64.3%), free throws (16-9), steals (14-7), points off turnovers (18-14) and points in the paint (30-26).
- Both teams scored two fast break points.
- Sawicki's tied career-bests in assists (four) and steals (two). 12 rebounds are the second most of her career. She recorded the third double-double of her season/career. Fourth game this season with 10+ rebounds. She has scored in double digits in 10 games this season including the last seven in a row. She has scored 12 points in three consecutive games. She has recorded at least six rebounds in 11 of 15 games this season.
- Eggebrecht tied her season high in three-point attempts (five – tie). She has recorded 10+ points in 34 of her 42 games as a Husky including 12 of 15 games this year. Sixth game this season with 2+ made threes.
- Henning tied season-highs in field goals (three) and blocks (one). Eight games with 2+ rebounds and 2+ assists.
- Zarneke tied career-highs in three-point attempts (five) and rebounds (two). She has scored 6+ points five times and made 2+ threes in four games including the last two. Has grabbed two rebounds in five games.
- Senior guard Morgan Draheim (Hortonville, Wis.) scored seven points. She has scored at least seven points in 11 games this year. She has 2+ assists in 12 games.
- Freshman forward Paige Lambe (Verona, Wis.) scored four points and grabbed two rebounds. She tied career-highs in minutes (14) and assists (one). She has scored 4+ points in eight games and grabbed 2+ rebounds in 10 games.
- Senior guard Tori Peschel (Sauk Centre, Minn.) grabbed four rebounds. She has grabbed 3+ rebounds in all 11 games she's played in and grabbed 4+ rebounds in nine games.
- Senior forward Jasmine Litt (Pulaski, Wis.) grabbed four rebounds in her return to action after missing a game due to injury. She has grabbed 4+ rebounds in five games.
- Freshman forward Abigail O'Reilly (Elgin, Minn.) grabbed two rebounds in just three minutes of action. She has grabbed at least two rebounds in five games.
