St. Cloud State wins 6th straight game in Atia’s shutout
Marquette, MI.- St. Cloud State Men's Soccer (6-2-0, 4-0-0 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) won their sixth straight game as they defeated Northern Michigan 2-0 for their second straight shutout win. The first half was fairly quiet for both teams before Philip Caputo dribbled the ball into the box where he was fouled, leading to a penalty kick. Caputo stepped to the line and fired a shot to the right post which beat the keeper to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute. St. Cloud State held that lead for the remainder of the half. The second half also started slowly until the Wildcats created a break opportunity which led to the Huskies fouling Northern Michigan in the penalty box. A Northern Michigan player stepped up to the plate and fired a shot that would be denied by goalkeeper Ramy Atia who made an incredible diving save to his left to block the shot in the 61st minute. That save was a massive momentum killer for the Wildcats. The teams battled late into the game before the Northern Michigan goalkeeper sent a ball into the Huskies box where Andrew Holmes came away with the ball. Holmes passed it up to Caputo who took a couple of dribbles and fired a missile at the mid line which flew past the keeper and blew up in the back of the net in the 82nd minute. The St. Cloud State defense again held strong in the final minutes of the game as the Huskies won their sixth straight game 2-0 against Northern Michigan.
