Gentry’s late game-winning goal gives Huskies 2-1 win over No.15/RV Mercyhurst in first regular season home game
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 11 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (3-0-0, 0-0-0 WCHA) continued its perfect start to the 2024-25 season on Friday night, beating No. 15/RV Mercyhurst 2-1, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud thanks to a late-game goal by fifth year forward Emma Gentry (Alpena, Mich). It marks the first time in program history that a team has begun a season with a 3-0 start.
Sophomore forward Sofianna Sundelin (Ulvia, Finland) was the first player to get in the score book when she scored her first goal of the season early in the second period to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. The Lakers (1-2-0, 0-0-0 AHA) responded with a goal of their own with 40 seconds left in the second to tie the game going into the final frame. Gentry's first game-winning goal of the season came with just under four minutes left in the final period and was enough to keep the Huskies perfect start to the new season intact. The goal was the 50th of her career (13th game winner) and the 75th point of her career.
Sophomore forward Greta Henderson (Regina, Saskatchewan) and sophomore forward Laura Zimmermann (Ringgenberg, Switzerland) tallied assists on Sundelin's goal, while sophomore defender Carmen Bray (Nanaimo, British Columbia) and fifth year forward Abby Promersberger (Fargo, N.D.) recorded assists on Gentry's game-winner.
The Huskies outshot Mercyhurst 27-22 and went 2-for-2 on the penalty kill. SCSU is a perfect 13-of-13 on the kill to start the season.
Fifth year goaltender Sanni Ahola (Helsinki, Finland) earned her third win in as many games to start the season. She saved 21 of the 22 shots she faced (.955 save percentage).
