St. Cloud State opened up conference play this past weekend as they traveled Minot State and Minnesota Crookston.
Friday's game saw the Huskies flexed their defensive muscle in the first quarter as they held the Beavers to nine points on 4/13 shooting. Offensively, St. Cloud State put up 19 points by shooting 7/17, but were aggressive attacking the paint as they made five of their six free throw attempts. The teams battled in the second quarter as the Beavers quickly cut the Huskies lead to six points with 7:49 remaining in the half. Kylan Gerads pushed that lead back up to double-digits after she cashed a three-pointer and then finished a layup off her own miss to set the score at 26-15. St. Cloud State would go into halftime leading 29-20 after holding the Beavers to 36% from the field. SCSU's offense started to pick up coming out of halftime as a 9-2 run gave them a 15 point lead with 3:11 left in the third quarter. St. Cloud State would comfortably hold a 48-32 lead going into the final quarter after Jada Eggebrecht nailed a jumper with 39 seconds remaining. Minot State came out with a spark to start the fourth quarter as a 7-0 run at the 6:30 mark of the game cut St. Cloud State's lead to 10 points. SCSU would call a timeout and after trading turnovers, Reagan Briggs knocked down a much needed three-pointer for the Huskies to ease the tension. Minot State was never able to crack the St. Cloud State's lead into single digits the rest of the way as the Huskies picked up their first conference victory with a 63-51 win. The Huskies defense was lights out as they held Minot State to 40% from the field, 28% from three, and forced 19 turnovers. Jada Eggebrecht scored a game-high 19 points to go along with three rebounds and one assist and steal. Eggebrecht has scored 16+ points in four of SCSU's six games this season. Kylan Gerads set a career-high in scoring as she tallied 12 points on 4/6 shooting. She also made two three-pointers and grabbed six rebounds which she has done three times this season.
The first quarter against Minnesota Crookston was tightly contested as neither team were able to build much of a lead. A layup by Reagan Briggs with four seconds left would give St. Cloud State a 20-19 advantage at the end of the quarter. The second quarter saw the Golden Eagles start to take control as they took a 33-25 lead after going on a 12-2 run. The Huskies didn't allow Crookston to take full control as they countered with a 12-2 run of their own to close out the second quarter as Paige Lambe accounted for eight of those points. After a strong finish to the half, St. Cloud State would narrowly trail 36-38 at the break. The Huskies carried over their momentum from the end of the second quarter into the third quarter as they took a 46-38 lead after Jada Eggebrecht capped off a 10-0 with a pull-up three. SCSU kept it rolling in the third as they outscored the Golden Eagles 27-12 in the frame as they would lead 63-50 going into the fourth quarter. The Huskies pushed their lead up to 17 points early in the fourth, but Crookston battled all the way back as a jumper by Emma Miller cut the St. Cloud State lead down to two points with 1:06 left in the game. The Golden Eagles turned up their pressure and defensive intensity in the fourth to comeback and relied on a zone defense. On the ensuing Huskies possession and the pressure turned up, the Huskies moved the ball well against zone and ultimately found an open Eggebrecht in the slot as she drilled a clutch three-pointer with 38 seconds remaining to put SCSU up five points. Crookston would not slump their heads as Emma Miller returned the favor with a three-pointer of her own with 25 seconds remaining. Crookston would be forced to foul and wrongly chose Eggebrecht who is a 92.9% foul shooter. Jada calmy knocked down both free throws to put the Huskies up by four points with 19 seconds remaining. The highly touted defense of St. Cloud State came up with a clutch stop as more free throws for the Huskies would seal a 82-76 victory over Minnesota Crookston. Abigail O'Reilly set a career-high in scoring as she notched 19 points on a very efficient 8/10 shooting. She also dished three assists and grabbed two rebounds. Paige Lambe nearly tallied a double-double with a career-high of 14 points and eight rebounds. Lambe shot 5/10 from the field. Jada Eggebrecht finished the game with 12 points on 4/9 shooting while grabbing four rebounds.
