St. Cloud State Tennis Sweeps Bemidji State, Wins 7-0

Huskies earn first victory of the season
St. Cloud, Minn. – St. Cloud State Tennis (1-2, 1-1 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) picked up their first victory of the season as they beat Bemidji State (0-2, 0-1 NSIC) 7-0 Saturday afternoon. The Huskies earned the doubles point by winning all three matches and then won all six singles matches to complete the sweep.
DOUBLES
The Huskies had a strong start to the match with three wins in doubles. In the No. 1 spot, the international tandem of junior Claudia Muñoz Perez (Tarragona, Spain) and freshman Lara-Maria Schaefer (Nuremberg, Germany) defeated Kate Taylor and Valesca Rodriguez 6-2 to put the Huskies in prime position to capture the doubles point. Junior Maria Paz Aoki (Marcos Paz, Argentina) and Johana Brower (Sioux Falls, S.D.) clinched the doubles point for the Huskies with a clean 6-0 victory in the No. 2 spot. To put the cherry on top, senior Maria Molitor (Delano, Minn.) and freshman Brooklyn Broadwell (Thief River Falls, Minn.) captured a 6-2 victory in the No. 3 spot as St. Cloud State swept the doubles round. All three doubles pairings have started the year with a record of 2-1.
SINGLES
Needing only three points to win the match, Schaefer put the second point on the board for SCSU with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Isabela Nelson in the No. 6 spot. In the No. 2 spot, sophomore Oriana Grott (Warsaw, Poland) claimed her first victory of the season with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Valesca Rodriguez. Now leading 3-0 in the match, Brower clinched the first victory of the season for the Huskies with a 6-1, 6-1 win in the No. 4 spot. The Huskies continued to stockpile points as Muñoz Perez put the 5th point on the board with a 6-3, 6-1 victory in the No. 3 spot. Paz Aoki had a thrilling match in the No. 1 spot as she battled back and forth with Kate Taylor. The Argentinian would ultimately come out victorious with a 6-4, 6-7, 10-4 win. Broadwell completed the sweep for the Huskies with a come from behind 3-6, 6-0, 10-5 win in the No. 5 spot.

St. Cloud State will return home to faceoff against Saint Benedict (0-0) on Friday, February 23 at 4:30 p.m. The match will be played at the Sta-Fit Tennis Center. The match will also serve as the fifth annual Jerry Anderson Legacy Match.
