Brown gets interim title removed after taking over the role in August 2023
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Director of Athletics Holly Schreiner has named Gabrielle Brown head coach of SCSU Track & Field/Cross Country, as announced Friday. Brown gets the interim tag removed from her title after assuming the role in August 2023. A three-time All-American hurdler at Hamline, Brown joined St. Cloud State after three seasons as an assistant coach at Macalester. She is the first Black female head coach in the history of St. Cloud State Athletics.
"I am excited about the passion that Gabrielle brings to our programs," said Schreiner, "The energy that Gabrielle adds to all that she does is contagious, and I believe in her vision for this program and her commitment to getting us where we need to be."
"First off, I am grateful to my higher power for this opportunity," said Brown, "I am also super grateful for the search committee for their time and effort that went into this process and to Holly for her support and the continued collaboration – I look forward to many years of working together and expanding her vision for this department. Track & Field / Cross Country are sports where we have the opportunity to connect so many different types of people from all over the place and I look forward to being the glue that brings them all together. I'm proud and happy to call St. Cloud my new home and I look forward to advancing all things St. Cloud State Track & Field / Cross Country. Go Huskies!"
The two programs have seen growth throughout her first season at the helm. Three cross country student-athletes earned Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) All-Academic recognition in the fall and six indoor track & field student-athletes were recognized in the winter by the NSIC for their efforts in the classroom with four of the nine honorees, earning spots on the All-Academic Team of Excellence. Under her direction, the program has also had one NSIC Myles Brand All-Academic with Distinction Award winner and one All-NSIC performer (indoor track & field).
Prior to SCSU, Brown spent three seasons as a full-time assistant coach at Macalester, serving as the sprints, jumps and hurdles coach under longtime collegiate head coach Dan Schofer. During her time with the Scots, three student-athletes qualified for the NCAA Championships while four earned USTFCCCA All-Region honors. Four Macalester athletes were crowned MIAC Champions and 25 earned All-MIAC honors under Brown's tutelage. In Brown's final season with the Scots, Macalester jumper Journey Amundson became the program's first student-athlete to be named MIAC Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year. Five program records fell during Brown's time with Macalester.
Scot student-athletes impressed in the classroom with Brown providing academic support as four earned Academic All-District honors, seven added USTFCCCA All-Academic laurels and 36 were named Academic All-MIAC.
Beginning her collegiate coaching career at Jamestown in 2019-20 as a graduate assistant under Megan Kuehl, Brown assisted in all areas of the program including practice planning and implementation, meet preparation and recruiting while managing the Jimmie social media accounts. Under Brown's watch, 11 Jamestown athletes earned All-Conference honors, two advanced to the NAIA Championships and one captured a conference title.
In addition to her extensive coaching background, Brown brings exceptional experience on the track to St. Cloud State as the standout hurdler earned three All-American honors during her collegiate career at Hamline. She graduated as the school record-holder in the 60 Meter and 100 Meter Hurdles while running on the school record 4x100 Meter Relay team. She placed eighth at the 2018 NCAA DIII Indoor Championships in the 60 Meter Hurdles then took fifth at the 2018 NCAA DIII Outdoor Championships with a time of 14.06 in the 100 Meter Hurdles. Brown won six individual MIAC Championships and was named the 2019 MIAC Outdoor Championships Most Outstanding Track Athlete.
A native of St. Paul, Minnesota, Brown was a MSHSL Section 4AA Champion at St. Paul Johnson High School and qualified for the MSHSL Class AA State Championships in both the 100 and 300 Meter Hurdles as a senior.
Brown holds her master's degree in Leadership from Jamestown in addition to undergraduate degrees in Communication and Education from Hamline.
