St. Cloud State Track & Field Finishes Sixth at Wartburg Select

Huskies record two event wins, 8 top-five finishes as five set new personal bests
WAVERLY, Iowa. – St. Cloud State Track & Field continued its 2024 outdoor season with a sixth-place finish at the Wartburg Select in Waverly, Iowa at Wartburg College on Friday and Saturday. The Huskies recorded two event wins, eight top-five finishes while five individuals set new personal bests. There were also four season-best marks set.
The Huskies got off to a strong start in their lone event on Friday – the javelin throw. Freshman jumper/thrower Savannah Reinke (Malta Bend, Mo.) won the event, tossing a new personal best 36.20m (118-09) improving on her best throw from a week ago by an impressive 4.87m (16 feet). Freshman Trinity Wallendal (Fon du Lac, Wis.) made a strong first impression, placing fourth in the first meet competing in the event. Freshman Hannah Bruskiewicz (Rogers, Minn.) also made her javelin throw debut in the meet.
On Saturday, the Huskies added another event win when three-time All-American, graduate jumper Paola Breña (Queretero, Mexico) won the high jump. She did not have indoor eligibility for this year, so it was the first time she competed since the 2023 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships when she placed fifth and earned First Team all-America honors. Junior jumper/middle distance runner Makaylin Christenson (Prairie Farms, Wis.) tied her outdoor season best in the event from last week (1.53m / 5-0.25) and placed seventh. Senior jumper Elena Martinez-Rodriguez made her Husky debut in the event and tied for eighth place after clearing 1.48m (4-10.25).
Fifth-year distance runner Mariana Guerra-Reese (White Bear Lake, Minn.) earned a second-place finish in the 400m dash after running a new season-best time of 59.91. Freshman sprinter/jumper Myesha Thompson (Mount Horeb, Wis.) placed third in the long jump after leaping an outdoor season-best jump of 5.36m (17-7).
Senior sprinter Katie Lavato (Buffalo, Minn.) ran a 0.09 second personal best (12.39) and won her 100m dash prelim heat to earned automatic qualification into the final. She was seeded fourth in the final and finished fourth while clocking another personal best time (12.36).
Each SCSU relay recorded a top-four finish. The quartet of Guerra-Reese, Lavato, freshman middle distance runner Audrey Rabitz and Christenson ran a season-best time of 4:09.75 to place third in the 4x400m relay, while Wallendal, Lavato, freshman sprinter Viola Okey-Ezealah (Lagos, Nigera) and Thompson placed fourth in the 4x100m relay, running a season-best time of 49.80.
Senior distance runner Erica Conrad (Ashwaubenon, Wis.) ran a new personal-best in the 3,000m steeplechase (12:10.28) and placed sixth in the event. Her time was a 28 second season-best and a nine second lifetime best. Freshman distance runner Paige Beason (Ankeny, Iowa) made her debut in the event, running 12:22.41 and placing eighth.
Freshman distance runner Tegan Michalak (Arcadia, Wis.) shaved seven seconds off her 5,000m run time from last week's meet, clocking a new personal-best time of 20:14.53, while finishing sixth in the race.
Freshman thrower Alicia Jennissen (Sauk Centre, Minn.) recorded a new personal best in the discus throw with a toss of 28.27m (92-9).
