St. Cloud State Women’s Basketball Close Out Regular Season With Two Home Games

Huskies have home playoff game clinched
St. Cloud, Minn.- St. Cloud State Women's Basketball (13-12, 10-10 NSIC) close out the regular season with two home games against No. 25 Minnesota State Mankato on Friday, February 21 and then Winona State on Saturday, February 22. Friday's game against Mankato is set for 7:30 p.m. while Saturday's game against Winona State will tipoff at 5:30 p.m.

Last Time Out
St. Cloud State was on the road this past weekend as they traveled to Wayne State and then to Augustana.
The game started slow offensively for the Huskies against Wayne State as their first field game came at the 5:03 mark of the first quarter from a Jada Eggebrecht three. That three tied the game at four. The rest of the first quarter remained a defensive battle as WSC led 10-8 after the first quarter following a buzzer beating layup. The second quarter saw the Huskies offense pick up as a three-pointer by Alana Zarneke capped off a 9-2 run. With a five-point deficit, the Wildcats turned the tables on SCSU with a 10-0 run as they now led by five points with 3:42 left in the half. Kylan Gerads stopped the bleeding with a jumper, but the Huskies would ultimately trail 24-21 at halftime. Out of the break, the Huskies opened with a 5-2 run to tie the game up at 26. Neither team led by more than one possession in the third quarter as St. Cloud State took a 39-38 lead into the fourth quarter. The competitive play continued late into the fourth quarter where the game would be tied at 45 with 4:26 left in the game. Back-to-back layups by Paige Lambe and Rachel Kottke gave the Huskies a four-point lead as the defensive stops started to flow. Two free throws by Zarneke pushed that lead up to six points with 2:43 left in the game. With the Huskies looking to seal the game, the defense for the Wildcats picked up as a 5-1 run set the score at 52-50 with 26 seconds left as WSC possessed the ball. Tate Norblade would attack the rim and spin her way to a layup which tied the game at 52. The Huskies called a timeout with now a chance to win the game. After the ball was advanced, Eggebrecht had the ball near halfcourt as time started to tik away. Moving to the wing, Zarneke would free up Kottke with an off ball screen as she flared to the top of the key. Receiving the ball, Lambe would go to screen Kottke with 7.1 seconds left. The Wildcats had a miscommunication where they did not properly switch on the screen. In the midst of confusion, Kottke took a one dribble step-back three that banged home as St. Cloud State now led 55-52 with 3.8 seconds remaining. The Wildcats called a timeout to then advance the ball. Now in need of a three, the Wildcats fired a contested three at the buzzer which did not go, leading to a 55-52 victory for the Huskies. Rachel Kottke led the Huskies with 17 points on an efficient 6/10 shooting. She also splashed three threes, grabbed three rebounds, and nabbed a steal. This was her second game scoring 17+ points and eighth game with 3+ threes. Jada Eggebrecht totaled 11 points, five rebounds, and two steals. With her lone three-point make, Eggebrecht is now tied for eighth place all-time in three-pointers made with 127. She is tied with Emily VanGorden.

The Appleton, Wis. native got off to a hot start as she scored 12 points and cashed two threes in the first frame. Moving into the second quarter, the offense kept humming for St. Cloud State as they had doubled up Augustana with a 32-16 lead halfway through the second quarter. The Huskies kept pouring it on the Vikings as back-to-back threes by Jada Eggebrecht pushed the lead up to 21 points. St. Cloud State steadily held that lead as they went into halftime with a 45-27 advantage. The Huskies kept it rolling in the second half as they comfortably led by 17+ points in the third quarter. Taking a 65-48 lead into the fourth quarter, St. Cloud State did not let go of the rope as they led by 14+ points throughout. The Vikings made a run at the end of the game with a 7-0 spurt, but it would not matter as the Huskies won their third straight game with a 74-60 win against the Vikings. Alana Zarneke stuffed the stat sheet as she tallied 20 points on 6/11 shooting, seven assists and rebounds, four threes, and three stocks. The assists were a career-high. This was her fourth game with 20+ points and third game with 4+ threes. Jada Eggebrecht scored 21 points while making three three-pointers, grabbing four rebounds, and recording a steal. By making three three-pointers, Eggebrecht is now in sole possession of eighth place in all-time three-pointers in program history with 130. This was her fourth game with 20+ points this season.

Playoff Push
With one week left in the regular season, the Huskies will be looking to make a playoff push to solidify their place in the standings. The top four seeds in the standings receive a bye to the Stanford Pentagon, teams seeded 5-8 will host a first round playoff game, and teams seed 9-12 will travel to the corresponding host. St. Cloud State is currently tied for seventh in the NSIC Standings and have already clinched a home playoff game. With two wins and some help, the Huskies could climb as high as fifth, but can drop no lower than eighth.

Friday's game against Mankato will be the 115th all-time meeting between the teams with St. Cloud State holding a 67-47 record. The Mavericks have won three straight games in the series including their matchup earlier this season.

With the looks of a blowout in the making, the Huskies roared back in the third quarter as they opened the half on a 15-5 run to cut the lead under 20 with 6:46 remaining in the quarter. St. Cloud State continued to apply offensive pressure as a three-pointer by Kristi Kottke got the game under 10 points with 1:37 left in the quarter. Kottke drained another three with six seconds remaining in the quarter to set the score at 76-68 going into the fourth. St. Cloud State had an offensive explosion in the third quarter as they outscored Mankato 37-16 while making six threes and shooting 65% from the field. The momentum continued for the Huskies into the fourth as a layup by Kylan Gerads brought the Huskies within three-points. The teams traded buckets over the next few minutes as a three by Alana Zarneke again got the lead down to three points. The Mavericks were able to get a comfortable lead again as they pushed it back up to seven points with 2:36 left in the game. Despite a resilient comeback attempt, the No. 10 Mavericks would go on to defeat St. Cloud State 96-87. Saturday's game against Winona State will be the 50th matchup in the series between the teams with St. Cloud State holding a 30-19 record. SCSU has won five straight games against the Warriors including their meeting earlier this season.
Through the first five minutes of the game, Winona State narrowly held a 9-6 advantage after Olivia Gamoke made a three-pointer to break the tie. St. Cloud State started to take control as they held the Warriors scoreless over the next four minuets to now lead 15-9 after a 9-0. The Huskies added some fireworks to the end of the first quarter as Paige Lambe swished a turn around jumper to beat the buzzer. St. Cloud State would lead 17-11 after the buzzer beater by Lambe. The Huskies held a steady lead throughout most of the second quarter, but free throws by Winona State cut SCSU's lead down to three points. With 2:16 left in the second quarter, scored the next four points as the lead went back up to seven. Kylan Gerads expanded that lead to nine following an offensive rebound and putback. The Huskies would lead 29-20 going into halftime after holding Winona State to a mere 19% from the field in the half. Winona State opened the second half with some energy as a 4-0 run got the lead down to five. From that point, St. Cloud State started to take control as Jada Eggebrecht capped off a 14-2 run for the Huskies by drilling a three-pointer. SCSU led by 17 points with 4:36 left in the third quarter but kept pouring it on the Warriors as Eggebrecht splashed another three with 22 seconds left to extend the lead to 22 points. The fourth quarter saw the Huskies lead by 21+ points throughout as they came away with a 66-41 victory against Winona State. The Warriors scored less than 11 points in every quarter and shot 21% from the field in the game. Kristi Kottke paced the Huskies in scoring with 15 points to go along with six rebounds, and four steals. Kottke shot 7/9 from the field. Scouting Minnesota State Mankato
The Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks come into matchup sitting third in the NSIC with a 21-5 record and a 17-3 mark in conference play. MSU has a two-game win streak with victories against Minot State and UMary. The Mavericks are currently the No. 25 ranked team in the latest WBCA Poll. In the NSIC Preseason Coaches Poll, the Mavericks were projected to finish first after coming off a 32-5 record with a 20-2 mark in conference play. Minnesota State is currently the reigning NSIC Champion, NSIC Tournament Champion, NCAA Central Region Tournament Champion, and National Champion. Mankato defeated Texas Woman's University 89-73 to win their second national championship.
The Mavericks hold two of the top five scorers in the NSIC in Natalie Bremer, who's 19.9 points ranks third, and Destinee Bursch, who's 17.2 points ranks fifth. Bremer is shooting 49.3% from the field while grabbing 5.2 rebounds per game and nabbing 2.8 steals per game. Bursch shoots 52.9% from the field to go along with 4.2 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.2 steals.
Head Coach Emilee Thiesse enters her 12th season with the Mavericks in the 2024-25 season. She has accumulated a 249-121 record while guiding Minnesota State to five NCAA Tournament appearances including each of the last three years. Thiesse is the winningest coach in program history and is the reigning NSIC Coach of the Year.

Scouting Winona State
The Winona State Warriors enter this matchup with the Huskies holding an 10-16 record with a 6-14 mark in conference play. The Warriors have lost four of their past five games, but snapped their four-game skid with a win against Minot State on Saturday. The Warriors came into this season projected to finish 10th in the NSIC following a 2023-24 season where they tallied a 10-18 record with a 9-13 mark in conference play. The Warriors qualified for the NSIC Tournament where they were defeated 67-72 against MSU Moorhead.
The Warriors currently hold three double-digit scorers in Olivia Gamoke, Hailey Markworth, and Vivica Bretton. Gamoke leads the team with 13.0 points per game while shooting 37.5% from the field and 38.2% from three. She is also grabbing 3.1 rebounds per game. Scouting Winona State
