SCSU takes early lead before five straight UND goals in 6-2 loss
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (11-14-1, 4-11-1 NCHC) played even with No. 16/17 North Dakota (13-10-2, 7-5-1 NCHC) for 32 minutes, but then a five-minute stretch with three UND goals was the difference in a 6-2 loss on Saturday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud. Freshman forward Austin Burnveik (Ham Lake, Minn.) and junior defenseman Josh Zinger (Red Deer, Alberta) both scored for the Huskies.
For the second night in a row, SCSU scored the game's first goal, netting a power play goal at 9:27 on a one-timer from Burnevik, his team-leading sixth goal on the man advantage this season. Burnevik ripped a shot from outside the right dot on a feed from freshman forward Gavyn Thoreson (Andover, Minn.) that was deflected off the skate of sophomore forward Tyson Gross (Calgary, Alberta). UND would score at the 15:59 mark of the opening frame to tie the score at 1-1 heading into the first intermission.
After a penalty called on SCSU midway through the opening frame, North Dakota would score on the power play at 11:59, which gave the Fighting Hawks the first lead of the night and began a string of three goals in just over five minutes. The short five-minute stretch changed the game and allowed North Dakota to take momentum of the game.
North Dakota extended its lead to 5-1 after the 10:48 mark of the third period before Zinger scored an extra attacker goal at 13:57. The Fighting Hawks then added an empty net goal to finish the scoring at 6-2.
