Slow Start Hurts St. Cloud State Men’s Hockey in Loss to No. 4 Western Michigan

Huskies fall behind early, fall 4-0 in series opener with Broncos
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – A slow start doomed St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (11-15-1, 4-12-1 NCHC) in a 4-0 setback to No. 4 Western Michigan (19-5-1, 12-2-1 NCHC) on Friday night at Lawson Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich. The Broncos scored just 79 seconds into the game, then again later in the first period and finally twice in the third for the 4-0 score.
Western Michigan controlled the entirety of the first period, outshooting SCSU 14-2 while taking a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. The two teams then played even for much of the final 40 minutes, with SCSU leading the shots on goal 22-20 in the second and third periods, but WMU scored at the 15:31 and 17:15 marks of the third period, the latter an empty net goal to close the game.

- Senior forward Mason Salquist (Grand Forks, N.D.) went 13-9 in the faceoff dot.
- Sophomore forward Daimon Gardner (Eagle Lake, Ontario) led the team in shots on goal with four.
- With the loss, St. Cloud State moves to 25-16-5 all-time against Western Michigan and 9-7-3 against the Broncos in Kalamazoo.
- On the season, SCSU moves to 2-12-0 when its opponent scores first, 1-5-1 when trailing after the first period, 0-8-1 when trailing after the second period and 5-8-1 when its opponents outshoot SCSU.
- Salquist won 10+ faceoffs for the team-leading 17th time this season to improve to 57.7 percent (274-201) in the dot this season.
- Fifth-year goaltender Gavin Enright (Farmington, Minn.) made 30 saves in the game, the third time this season and ninth time in his career he has made 30+ saves.
