SCSU shuts out Peacocks in Second Half
Fayette, Iowa- St. Cloud State Men's Soccer opened up their season Thursday night against the Upper Iowa Peacocks and came away with a 3-1 victory down in Iowa. The teams battled scoreless for the first 15 minutes of play, but that would change following a corner kick by the Huskies. A yellow card would be given to each team following the kick, leading to a free kick for SCSU. Diego Ramos stepped up to take the free kick in the Huskies attacking zone and delivered a beautiful ball to Andrew Holmes who scored the goal off his head in a crowded area as St. Cloud State took a 1-0 lead. The Peacocks found the equalizer nine minutes later after a defensive misplay by the Huskies led to a goal by Julian Mesen. St. Cloud State continued to create offensive opportunities the rest of the half as they totaled six corner kicks and shots, but the game remained tied going into the break.
Coming out of halftime, the Huskies continued to apply pressure offensively as Yuken Harmon found a streaking Andrés García down the center of the pitch who ultimately would be fouled in the box leading to a penalty kick. Garcia stepped up to take the kick in a big moment as he fired a shot left-middle that burned the keeper and gave St. Cloud State a 2-1 advantage in the 52nd minute. The defense of the Huskies was stout and shut down all opportunities for the Peacocks in the second half. The starting backline defense of William Gonzalez. Yannick Langerhuizen, Ryder Delport, and Jalen Joshua Rueter limited the Peacocks to three shots in the second half with five total in the game. With five minutes left in the game, Holmes found Matt Greenland deep in the right corner who then centered a pass to Owen Worsdell, creating another scoring opportunity for the Huskies. Worsdell delivered a shot in front of the net that would be saved but stuck with the play and cashed in a goal off a rebound. The late goal by Worsdell was the nail in the coffin as the Huskies took a 3-1 lead which held as the buzzer sounded. St. Cloud State picked up their first win of the season on the road with a score of 3-1.
