Loftus scored four points to help Huskies capture Cactus Cup title
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey sophomore defenseman Finn Loftus (Blaine, Minn.) was named National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) Defenseman of the Week, as announced by the league on Tuesday. Loftus had his best weekend as a Husky to-date, scoring four points with a goal and three assists and a +1 mark on the ice to help the Huskies capture a Cactus Cup championship in Palm Springs, Calif.
The weekly honor is the first of Loftus' career and the third of the season for the Huskies. Freshman goaltender Yan Shostak (Minsk, Belarus) and freshmen forward Nolan Roed (White Bear Lake, Min.) each earned NCHC Rookie of the Week honors earlier this season.
In a 6-2 win over Yale on Friday (Jan. 2), Loftus scored the game-winning goal and added an assist for his first career two-point game. He then had two assists in a 3-2 championship game win over UMass Lowell on Saturday (Jan. 3) to record the first two-assist game of his career.
On the season, Loftus has scored three goals and seven assists for 10 points with a +4 mark on the ice. His point totals match senior defenseman Max Smolinski (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) for the team lead in all three categories among blue liners. He has scored a point in three consecutive games and in five of the last six games.
