Women's Basketball Tops Valley City State in Home Opener 91-65

St. Cloud, Minn. -- The St. Cloud State University women's basketball team took the court at Halenbeck Hall this afternoon for their first home appearance of the season. The Huskies prevailed over the Vikings of Valley City, N.D. with a final score of 91-65, pushing their record to 1-0 on the season.
Both teams battled in the first half before the Huskies completed a 10-0 run in the final three minutes to secure a 41-34 lead at halftime. St. Cloud State's 10-0 run was spurred by forcing turnovers in their aggressive zone defense and field goals by senior captains Sam Price (Eau Claire, Wis.) and Jessica Benson (Grand Meadow).
The Huskies continued to extend their lead throughout the second half as first year players Chelsea Nooker (Green Bay, Wis.) and Betsy MacDonald (St. Paul) added seven and five points respectively. Thirteen players saw action in today's contest for St. Cloud State. The Huskies bench outscored Valley City State's 46-29.
Senior forward Jessica Benson led the way with 19 points and five rebounds.
Sophomore forward Lexy Petermann (Fond du Lac, Wis.) went seven of 10 from the field and three of three from behind the charity stripe to finish with 18 points for the Huskies.
Senior point guard Rachael Moen (Savage) finished with a team-high six assists.
Emma Konopasek (De Pere, Wis.) pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
St. Cloud State shot 57% from the field and 78% from the line in today's showing. The Huskies outrebounded the Vikings, 34-28.
Brittany Lehner led Valley City State with 18 points, going nine of 11 from the field.
The Huskies will return to action on Wednesday as they travel to Des Moines, IA to take on Grand View University in a 7 p.m. match-up.
