The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (5-0-1, 2-0-0 NCHC) extended its 2013-14 unbeaten streak with a big 3-1 win at #5/6 North Dakota (2-3-1, 1-3-0 NCHC) on Saturday, Nov. 2 in Grand Forks, N.D.
This marked the first time since Jan. 27-28, 2006 that the Huskies have posted a weekend sweep at North Dakota.
After a close defensive battle through the early going in the first period, UND finally broke the ice with a power play marker at 18:40 of the first period by Troy Stecher. UND's Nick Mattson notched the lone assist on the play.
The Huskies charged back in the second period at 6:59 with an even strength goal by junior defender Tim Daly. Senior forward Nic Dowd and sophomore forward Jonny Brodzinski each had assists on the play for the Huskies. Daly put a shot on net first and then pounced on the loose puck that was just out of the grasp of UND netminder Zane Gothberg.
SCSU padded its lead to 2-1 just 12 second later with a goal by Dowd. Sophomore forward Jimmy Murray was along the back boards when he found an open Dowd, who roofed a wrist shot past Gothberg. Sophomore David Morley added the second assist on the play for the Huskies.
Of note, SCSU outshot UND by a 15-8 tally in the second period.
In the third period, SCSU pushed its lead to 3-1 with a goal by sophomore forward Kalle Kossila at 9:35 with helpers from Joey Benik and Brodzinski. This was Kossila's 3rd goal of the new season.
SCSU outshot UND by a 29-17 margin in the game as Ryan Faragher (5-0-0) made 16 saves in the game. On the power play, SCSU was 0-2 and UND was 1-3 in the game. Gothberg was the goalie of record for UND with 26 saves.
