#1 St. Cloud State Ends Win Streak With Loss to #9/10 Union

St. Cloud, Minn. - The #1 ranked St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (11-2-2, 6-1-1-0 NCHC) saw its seven-game unbeaten streak end on Friday, Dec. 13 with a 4-1 setback at home against #9/10 Union College (12-3-2, 8-1-0 ECAC).
This marked the first loss for the Huskies since a 2-0 loss at home to Miami University on Nov. 8 and it was only the second loss of the 2013-14 season for SCSU. The Huskies will look to get back on track on Saturday, Dec. 14 with a 7:07 p.m. start at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. against Union.
Union used two power play opportunties in the first period to gain a 2-0 lead before the first intermission. The Dutchmen's Max Novak posted the first goal of the contest at 15:01 of the first period with power play assists from Mat Bodie and Daniel Carr.
Union stretched its lead to 2-0 with another power play marker at 16:15 of first by Eli Lichtenwald. Bodie and Matt Wilkins each had assists on the play.
The Huskies got back into the fray at 10:29 of the second period with a power play goal of their own by Joey Benik. He was assisted on his fourth goal of the year by Niklas Nevalaine and Kalle Kossila.
In the third period, Union regained control of the offense with an unassisted goal by Bodie at :43, and the final goal of the contest was posted by Union at 11:40 by Nick Cruice.
In the contest, SCSU and Union each tallied 35 shots apiece in the contest. Union was 2-of-6 on the power play and SCSU was 1-of-3 on the advantage in the game. In the nets, Alex Sakellaropoulos posted 34 saves and the win for Union while Ryan Faragher had 25 saves and allowed three goals in the loss for SCSU. Faragher played for 47:50 of the game before being replaced by Charlie Lindgren, who made six saves to finish the contest.
