#1 Huskies to Host #9/10 Union College on Dec. 13-14

The #1 ranked St. Cloud State men's hockey team (11-1-2, 6-1-1-0 NCHC) will continue its 2013-14 season with a pair of home dates against #9/10 Union College (10-3-2, 7-1-0 ECAC as of Dec. 10 - Union will play a game at Dartmouth on Dec. 11 before the trip to St. Cloud). The game on Dec. 13 between SCSU and Union will start at 7:37 p.m. and the game on Dec. 14 is slated to start at 7:07 p.m. Both games will be played at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center (5,371 cap./200x100) on the campus of St. Cloud State University. TEDDY BEAR TOSS: SCSU's annual Teddy Bear Toss will take place during the 1st intermission in the game against Union on Friday, Dec. 13. Fans are encouraged to bring a new or gently used Teddy Bear or stuffed animal toy to throw onto the ice during the Toss. All the items collected during the Teddy Bear Toss will be donated to this year's local Toys for Tots campaign.

ROAD KILL: SCSU charted its fourth consecutive road sweep of the season with a 4-2 win on Dec. 6 and a 5-1 win on Dec. 7 at #20 Minnesota Duluth. The Huskies own an eight-game road winning streak, which equals the longest road win streak for the Huskies during the team's Division I era since 1986-87. SCSU also won 8 consecutive road games to start the 2001-02 season.
NUMBERO UNO: The Huskies were the #1 team in this week's USCHO.com poll and were ranked #2 in the USA TODAY/USA Hockey poll on Dec. 9. The last time SCSU hit #1 in a DI national polls was in 2001-02, the Huskies held the number one spot in the poll for several weeks before falling back to #2 on Feb. 25, 2002.
GREAT START: The Huskies sit atop of the NCHCwith a 6-1-1-0 league record and they are 11-1-2 overall. This impressive start is the second best 14-game start for the Huskies. The best 14-game start in team history at the DI level was a 12-1-1 start at the beginning of the 2001-02 season. The 2001-02 season also marked the last time that the Huskies were ranked #1 in the college hockey polls from Dec. 3, 2001 to Feb. 18, 2002.
TURN OF THE CENTURY: Senior forward Nic Dowd leads SCSU with 9 goals this season. He has 39 goals and 55 assists to his credit during his career and is six points away from hitting the 100-point plateau. Dowd would become the 25 player in the history of DI hockey at SCSU to join the Huskies' 100-point club.
STREAK CITY: The Huskies will bring a seven-game unbeaten streak into the upcoming weekend series against nationally ranked Union College (10-3-2, 7-1-0 ECAC). The Union Dutchmen also wll bring a seven-game unbeaten streak into this weekend's series at the Brooks Center. This is the longest unbeaten streak for the Huskies since winning nine straight games from Jan. 2, 2010 to Jan. 29, 2010.
NCHC AWARDS: Ryan Faragher is fourth among the nation's Division I goalies this season with an 87.5% winning rate. He is an impressive 10-1-1 this season between the pipes for the Huskies with a sterling .927 save rate and a 1.91 goals against average. In his career, Faragher is 43-26-5 and this total includes 1904 saves and a 2.37 goals against average. He ranks eighth in the team records for saves and his career goals against average currently ranks second in the team career books behind Bobby Goepfert, who posted a 2.24 GAA from 2005-07...of note, Faragher was named the NCHC Goalie of the Week on Dec. 9 and Kevin Gravel was named the NCHC Defender of the Week on Dec. 9 for their work at UMD. Gravel had three points and was +5 on the weekend and Faragher had a total of 55 saves in the two games at UMD - including a season-high 36 on Friday.
BEST DEFENSE: The Huskies ranked first in the nation among Division I teams on defense this season. SCSU sits atop the charts with a 1.79 goals allowed per average this season. The Huskies have only allowed 25 goals in 14 games this season. The Huskies rank eighth in the nation among Division I teams on offense this season with a 3.71 goals per game scoring rate. In 14 outings this winter, the Huskies have notched 52 goals. On the topic of national leaders, SCSU ranks first in the nation with an 85.7% winning rate (11-1-2).
SUPER SOPHS: SCSU sophomores Jonny Brodzinski and David Morley currently share the team's top spot for points in 2013-14. Brodzinski had two goals on Dec. 6, while Morley posted one goal and two helpers in the Huskies' 5-1 win on Dec. 7. On the season, Morley has a team leading 10 assists and Brodzinski has seven goals and seven assists. Of note, Morley has scored 10 points (3g/7a) in his last six games for the Huskies. Brodzinski has posted eight points over that same six-game stretch with 6g/2a.
HUSKY NEWS AND NOTES: Jimmy Murray and Brooks Bertsch both scored their first goals of the 2013-14 during the Huskies' 5-1 win at UMD on Dec. 7....Sophomore Kalle Kossila scored his 20th career goal for the Huskies on Dec. 6 at UMD... Coach Bob Motzko currently owns a 173-126-37 career record with the Huskies since 2005-06. He is third in the team's record for wins just eight wins behind Charlie Basch, who had an 181-193-7 record from 1968 to 1984 at SCSU.
