SCSU was able to outgain NSU 468 to 462 in the game, but also turned the ball over five times.
The game was closely contested throughout with neither team able to open up a larger than 10-point lead. The Wolves took the lead for good in the final five minutes of the contest when quarterback Kyle Lavand connected with receiver Taylor Houchin on a 40-yard strike in the end zone to go ahead 31-24 and finish off a six play, 65-yard drive with 4:18 remaining in the game.
The Huskies would put together a final drive as they attempted to tie the score. Starting from their own 30-yard junior quarterback Nate Meyer connected with junior receiver Jameson Parsons for a 27-yard pass to bring the ball into visitor territory. Back-to-back rushes from sophomore running back Jaden Huff netted 13 yards and put the Huskies on NSU's 30-yard line. After an incompletion, Huff put the SCSU within five yards of a first down with his five-yard gain. The next two pass attempts fell incomplete though as the offense turned the ball over to the Wolves with 2:11 remaining in the contest.
With only two timeouts remaining, the Huskies defense registered two stops and used both timeouts to bring up a third-and-three with 1:59 remaining in the game. The Wolves' Lavand was able to break free on third down to record a first and allow NSU to kneel out the rest of the contest.
Lavand threw for 282 yards and four touchdowns in the win. His favorite target was Tyrell Anderson, who had seven catches for 75 yards and a touchdown. Channing Barber had an outstanding individual effort for NSU with 10 tackles, an interception in the end zone and five pass breaks ups.
Senior Ledell White made his final game at home memorable with 21 carries for a season-high 139 yards to lead the offense. Meyer was 17-for-33 for 226 yards and two touchdowns, but was also picked off three times in defeat. Senior tight end Grant Thayer hauled in five passes for 79 yards and a touchdown. Parsons, who entered the game averaging 133 yards a game in his previous five games, had five catches for 74 yards. Junior linebacker Adam Josephson recorded 12 tackles for SCSU. Jerry Duckworth tallied seven tackles including a sack for the Huskies.
Northern State took the early 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a Tyrell Anderson 26-yard grab only to see SCSU tie the game later in the quarter on a 42-yard Thayer touchdown reception. The Wolves wrestled the lead back on a Nicholas Truen 10-yard reception and added an Adrian Krupa 20-yard field goal to extend the advantage to 10 points with just under six minutes remaining in the opening half. SCSU junior kicker Derek Witte connected on his 28-yard field goal at the end of the first half to bring the Huskies to within one score going into the break.
The Huskies tied the game up early in the third quarter with Meyer's bootleg into the end zone for an 11-yard scamper (11:37). SCSU took its first and only lead of the game with Meyer connecting with sophomore Kasai Farris for a 15-yard touchdown with 3:50 remaining in the third period. The Wolves tied the game on a Lavand to Doherty seven-yard pass early in the fourth quarter (14:55) and took the lead for good on Lavand's 40-yard pass to Houchin (4:18)
The SCSU football team finishes up the 2015 season with a trip to University of Mary (1-9, 1-5 NSIC North) in Bismarck, N.D. on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 1 p.m.
Notes
- Ledell White's 139 yards rushing was his third 100-yard rushing game of the season and his first since 106 on the ground against Minot State (10/17). White has now led the team in rushing in five of the 10 games this season. His 139 yard rushing effort was his best rushing output since 169 yards rushing against MSU Moorhead last season. It was the eighth 100-yard rushing game of White's career.
- Nate Meyer's two touchdown passes extended his streak to six straight games with multiple passing touchdowns.
-Grant Thayer's touchdown catch was his fifth of the season and that tied his career-high set last season. He also has career-highs in both catches (35) and yards (540). Thayer has now recorded 86 catches (16th) for 1,389 yards (13th) and 14 touchdowns (t-14th) in his career to rank among the school's all-time leaders in those categories.
-The game was only the fourth time that Jameson Parsons did not break 100 yards receiving this season with his five catches for 74 yards. Parsons has now caught 58 passes for 1,152 yards and seven touchdowns this season. His 1,152 yards receiving is the second-best single season receiving total in school history.
- Senior center Bret Piekarski started his 46th consecutive game and tied Andrew Beckmann's school record for consecutive starts. Piekarski has started and played in every game since he arrived on campus.
