Mankato, Minn. - The St. Cloud State University women's hockey team (2-5-0, 0-3-0 WCHA) dropped a decisive 3-1 game to the Minnesota State University Mavericks (3-2-0, 1-2-0 WCHA) on Friday, Oct. 19 at the Verizon Center in Mankato, Minnesota.
The Huskies went into the first intermission with a 1-0 lead after senior Julia Tylke scored her first goal of the season on a two-player breakaway. Tylke was assisted by Hallie Theodosopoulos and Janine Alder at 19:18 of the first period.
"It was a blur," said Tylke. "I saw the one girl girl down and had a burst of energy; I dished it to [Theodosopoulos] and it was like telekinesis or something when she dished it right back. It felt great [to get the first one]; I felt it coming today."
"She is having a fantastic start to her senior year; every time she's on the ice she is dangerous," said Eric Rud about his thoughts on Tylke. "I know for her it was a relief to get that goal."
The Mavericks were not about to lay down for the Huskies. MSU came back in the second period to score two goals in 22 seconds. The first by Rebekah Kolstad, followed by Brooke Bryant to take the 2-1 lead on SCSU at 4:39 of the second period.
The final period continued the back-and-forth play on the ice, but Mankato managed to put away the game with an empty net goal by Jordan McLaughlin at 18:13 of period three. The Mavericks would take game one 3-1 in Mankato.
"We got chances, we were down around the net and I thought our [defense] moved the puck well tonight to put it in our forwards' hands," said Rud. "In the end, I think we needed to complete a little harder all over the ice. "
Alder made 31 saves in the WCHA matchup. Mankato's Abigail Levy totaled 26 saves. SCSU went 0-1 on the power play and 3-0 on the penalty kill. The teams will rematch tomorrow at the Verizon Center at 3:07 p.m.
