Women's Hockey Drop Close 3-2 Game at No. 4 Ohio State
11/2/2018 7:25:00 PM | Women's Hockey
COLUMBUS, OH - The St. Cloud State University Huskies women's hockey team (4-7-0, 2-5-0 WCHA) dropped a gritty 3-2 game to the Ohio State University Buckeyes (8-3-0, 4-1-0 WCHA) on Friday, Nov. 2 at the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus, OH.
The first period treated the Huskies quite well, coming out of it with a two-goal lead. Senior Julia Tylke opened the scoring for St. Cloud at 16:17 of the first period, assisted by defenseman Taylor Wemple and Kayla Friesen.
A very quick 17 seconds later, freshman Jenniina Nylund added another stat to her record as she put another goal in for SCSU, unassisted. That goal was Nylund's third of the season.
The second period slowed the Huskies down after Ohio State tied up the game 2-2 before the 20 minutes was over. The Buckeyes' Emma Maltais and Madison Field scored the two OSU goals respectively.
Ohio State would be the team to come out on top in the final period of play. OSU's Field scored her second of the game to put the Buckeyes in the 3-2 lead. Though a valiant effort from the Huskies through the rest of the game, including pulling their goaltender for the final minutes of play, SCSU couldn't get another puck past OSU.
St. Cloud State goaltender Janine Alder stopped 42 shots in the game; Ohio State's Andrea Braendli had 18 saves. Interestingly enough, the two goalies facing off on the ice during tonight's game in Ohio were teammates on the 2018 Switzerland Women's Ice Hockey Team for the PyeongChang Olympic Games. On that team, Alder made one appearance in the 2018 Olympics and notched a 19-save shutout against Korea.
Final shots on goal from tonight's game in Columbus were SCSU 20, OSU 45. St. Cloud went 0-2 on the power play and 2-0 on the penalty kill.
The Huskies and Buckeyes play game two tomorrow at Ohio State at 2:07 p.m. ct. The St. Cloud State women's hockey team returns home Saturday, Nov. 17 at 2:07 p.m. against the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers.
