Huskies open season at NDSU, Chuck Petersen Open

MANKATO, MINN. – It was a busy opening weekend for the St. Cloud State women's track and field team, as the Huskies split and opened the season at two separate meets. Two individuals competed at the North Dakota State Classic to open the season on December 7 while the rest of the team traveled to Mankato, Minnesota for the Chuck Petersen Open on Saturday.
St. Cloud State student-athletes Faith Lubner (Reedsville, Wis. / Reedsville)and Leighten Fischer (Iola, Wis. / Iola-Scandinavia) competed in the women's pentathlon at the NDSU Classic on Friday, December 7. Lubner finished the competition in sixth place with a score of 3245 points, while Fischer recorded a top-10 finish with 3103 points. Both women finished in the top-10 in all five individual events, with Lubner recorded top-5 finishes in the 60 meter hurdles and long jump.
The rest of the Huskies stayed closer to home, competing at the Chuck Peterson Open in Mankato Minnesota. Several student-athletes got things started on the right foot, including sophomore sprinter Emelia Burris (Wood Dale, Ill. / Fenton). The Huskies NSIC Player-to-Watch opened her season with a third-place finish in the 60 meter dash and won her heat in prelims thanks to a qualifying time of 7.70. The sophomore then ran 7.73 in finals to conclude the race in third place behind two sprinters from Minnesota State.
Burris also impressed in her field events, recording a second place finish in long jump thanks to a jump of 5.41 meters. Her teammate, Maya Taylor (Oswego, Ill. / Oswego East) also recorded a top-8 finish in the event as she came in fifth with a jump of 5.20 meters.
Emma Baynes (Mankato, Minn. / East) also qualified for finals in the event, finishing in sixth with a time of 7.88 after running 7.85 in prelims to qualify for finals. She also competed in the 200 meter finals and recorded another top-8 finish, coming in seventh with her time of 26.26.
The Huskies also had several student-athletes just miss the podium in their respective events. Cassidy Lackovic (Lake of the Hills, Ill. / Huntley) finished in 11th place in the 200 meter dash and won her heat with a time of 26.83, while Bridget Brown (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) finished in 15th with a time of 27.33. Brown additionally competed in the 400 meter dash, finishing in 11th with a time of 1:01.73.
St. Cloud State also had significant amounts of success in the field events, as the team recorded top-8 finished in pole vault, long jump, triple jump, and shot put. In fact, the Huskies had at least two student-athletes finish in the top-8 in all four events, including two-top three finishes in triple jump. Junior Abby Jungwirth (Forest Lake, Minn. / Forest Lake) finished second in the event with a jump of 11.59 meters while Taylor was third thanks to her jump of 11.57.
St. Cloud State's clocked two top-8 performances in pole vault, as Kalli Jo Klocke (Hayfield, Minn. / Hayfield) and Emma Gauert (New Ulm, Minn. / New Ulm) finished in fifth and eighth place respectively in the first indoor meet of their collegiate careers. Klocke debuted with a fifth place finish at a height of 3.15 meters, while Gauert finished in eighth at 2.85 meters.
Annie Falardeau (Grand Rapids, Minn. / Grand Rapids) and Dacoda Zimmerman (Racine, Wis. / Horlick) continued the freshman success in shot put, recording sixth and seventh place finishes in the event. Falardeau finished in sixth with a throw of 12.33 meters, while Zimmerman recorded a seventh place finish with a throw of 12.17 meters.
